I missed Shang-gu and Bai Jue and was excited to see there will be a sequel but I made the mistake of reading the comments and seeing the rumored actress fans trash talking Ancient Love Poetry really put down my mood in anticipating this. Maybe I'll take a look at the drama and see if the actress live up to the hype by her fans.
This drama is underrated. It should be seen more as it didn't betray the subjects and issues that the message intend to deliver to the audience. Without any spoilers, often when tackling about the decision to be child-free subjects somehow the drama would make the ending typical but not this drama it stayed loyal and crisis that arises as well didn't try to make an unbelievable plot twist in the decision made. Every discussions, decisions, resolving issues were being written naturally as what real life would happen should it happen.
With all respect to whole this drama( story, cast, acting ,direction) but I watched 25 ep and still didnt hook.…
It depends on preference of course as for me I have watched LAR until finished and the amount of embarassing moment in the middle of watching the drama is more imprinted than what plot I'm actually watching. There is too much blood spitting and dialogues between the main leads where I felt halfway watching the drama, is this a fan service show serving handsome guy and beautiful woman being weak and tortured? I even went back watch some key scenes of LAR and after watching ALP it just felt more contrast in terms of acting. So I finished watching that drama with a very uncomfortable feelings. While ALP gave me a plot to think about, scenes that left deep impression on me, and feeling of satisfaction of a well acted drama. regarding how they are not suits for this role, I could not have asked for a better combination of main leads, they both brought Shang Gu and Bai Jue with sincere portrayal. You can try to watch further until maybe episode 31 but considering by episode 25 you still think the main leads are not suitable in their roles then maybe this is not your type. Just my opinion of course and nor forcing you to agree.

I actually think the way this drama presented how the main leads fall in love is more realistic compared to other chinese dramas which are usually cringefest. I don't know what aspect of the leads falling in love in this drama is unbelievable because it's such a short time for you when in real life we have real stories where people just met once and willing to go to the end of the world to be together. For me the reason for falling in love doesn't have to always be about romance and chemistry to make it believable like you said Bai Jue is thousands of years old so would he falling in love be like of that teenagers and young people?, from episode 1 up to episode 12 their falling in love is actually through the act of growing fond of each other throughout many events where they both noticing and liking the endearing part of each other's character. Both are actually not romantically inclined type of people or else they would have fall in love throughout so many years of living. Shang Gu is a kid and all she likes is messing around and having fun before she met Bai Jue she never care think about anything else. While Bai Jue is someone who is a loner and will never interact or seek out people without reason until Zhiyang trapped him into teaching Shang Gu. Which is the first close contact he had with any woman ever. During the scene where he is unlocking her blocked spiritual vein is when his feelings are tingling as this is the first time he is very intimately close with anyone. Even Shang Gu felt it and gets giddy and flustered just like a kid discovering something she likes and this feelings develop more and more through multiple events that they were together in solving crisis and you can see how Bai Jue grew more warm towards Shang Gu. Bai Jue is an icecube and someone who is strictly business-like and Shang Gu cracked that ice so he said himself when he was telling Shang Gu the day she is becoming Chief god that one of the things she found endearing about her is that despite her shortcomings she still has the abundance of empathy and care for the people and willing to learn to improve herself so that she can fulfill her role, so even the way Bai Jue grew fond of her is because of "business" which is in line with his character, it would be out of character if he fell in love with her because she has pretty eyes or something alike.
Sorry that was long, not to descredit your opinion, but just addressing the part you felt unbelievable about them falling in love as I am considered old I guess and I actually relate more with this kind of falling in love compared with other dramas where they shove into audience face how in love the characters are through constant glancing and camera zoom in multiple scenes.

The storyline and character development is very faithful to the point when you go back and watch the first few episodes suddenly you just felt tears welling up in your eyes thinking how wrong things went later on.
Bai Jue and Shang Gu's portrayal by both actors are top notch until the end. Zhou Dongyu's acting had me in tears in episode 41 and again 49 when she cried at Bai Jue's tomb. Such strong emotions being displayed without over doing it. Xu Kai's acting made me shed tears in episode 38 when the anguish of Qing Mu not ready to leave his wife behind, but I have to say the final scene of Bai Jue and Yuan Qi in episode 48 really did it for me, I am not very emotional when watching drama but this drama made me cry a lot and Bai Jue and Yuan Qi's scene is legit the only scene in dramas that made me sobbing so hard. Bai Jue's way of talking to Yuan Qi so patient, so calm, so understanding yet still hopeful of being accepted as the father. I literally stand and give a standing ovation in tears to this scene. Another scene that I love is when Bai Jue sacrificed himself and the scene shifted to the forest and Tian Qi appeared with tears already in his eyes knowing that what has passed due to the snow coming down, despite their constant bickering they are still close brothers who grew up together. I love Tian Qi and Bai Jue's brotherhood, this is a rare storyline that could happen in cdrama and I'm glad ALP managed to do it well so that I don't have to wish to see it done better in other dramas.
I would like to give a special shout out to the actor who played Gu Jun, he didn't appear in many episode but he sure made his presence known in every scene he appeared. His character is complex where he had to raise the reborn form of his own master and later on unconsciously he grew fond of the vessel itself but as his own daughter. He distinctively carried this role well especially during the scene when Houchi was in distraught after meeting with Bai Jue. That conversation could have been cringe and awkward but due to strong acting by both he and Zhou Dongyu, that scene flows so smoothly and the conversation is very impactful.
Finally I would like to thank you this drama for existing. It would be enough fuel for me to rewatch and introducing me a list of good actors that I can check out their projects while waiting for another good drama to come.

When you are being invested in a drama after so long of good drama droughts it feels sad knowing this drama is coming to an end. I am very glad that whoever has a keen eyes in gathering all these unique cast together, Zhou Dongyu and Xu Kai are now my highest standard pair of main leads in dramas. Everyone has their perception of what good acting is, but for me people usually judge good acting based on the type of character being portrayed, it is obvious that people will praise good acting for a good natured, positive character, or bad evil character there is no in-between however Zhou Dongyu and Xu Kai has shown that they are able to be firm with their own character unique characteristic, be it as Shang Gu or Houchi, Bai Jue/Bo Xuan/Qing Mu, their understanding of their own character(s) makes their portrayal very natural, the way their character make decisions brought to troubles or heartbreak and how their respond solve it, none of it felt following the script, it's like I am following the Legend of Shang Gu and Bai Jue with a lot of feelings throughout every single episode because of their genuine and excellent portrayal. Can't wait for the finale tonight although I will be watching raw, the temptation is just too much.
I don't care for the haters for me a good drama is hard to come by and this drama is rare.

Some people think this part is boring(it's up to your perception) but their introduction and storyline was put in place for a strong reason that lasted the whole drama. No character was introduced and then disappeared and their role no longer valid in the future plot, nope all roles introduced has a part in what would happened later. Not even the snow goddess who actually played a role in how things actually came to be.
2. PLOT - Not many drama has intact plot from episode 1 until latest episode so far, what I love is that the plot move in according to how the characters was set up, the decisions they made, and how it push the plot development one example is Bai Jue, he was set up to be cold, unfriendly, revengeful towards injustice (this was subtly implied throughout the first few episodes and highlight over a tea among the three Zhiyang, Tianqi and Bai Jue) and he was called an ice cube but his ice are cracking with the wild character of Shanggu and this set up a foundation for how the plot develop further after a series of CONNECTED events. This is what lacking in some dramas nowadays, the plot and the characters are like oil and water
3. Plot Continuity - Often we see dramas do one plot line per episode or 1st half plot line and different 2nd half, here we can see intertwining of events that happened in the earlier plot with the current plot, places that some key events happened was revisited accidentally without the recognition of the current characters one due to being born after and the other is for other spoiler reason. This is a rare type of scenes and it happened here and there as the truth is unravel. Also characters are responding to familiar events and everyone is sharp in connecting the dots.
4. Acting are the most natural I've seen from this set of cast except for some 1 or 2 supporting role but the main roles all carried their role excellently as it highlights the character growth contributing to the gripping development of the storyline. One thing I love about this set of cast is that they all have subtle expression in delivering their role even when their character is not in lens focus.
One thing I know this comment section is very lively, even the haters came to speak their mind that means the drama is very good that it is threatening. :D
Wow the plot just keep building up and up I felt nervous with excitement everytime I clicked on new episode. I tried not to read the novel as most of the time, adaptation divert from the original source. But so far I'm loving it, glad I waited until more than 16 episodes to start binge watching. Some of the highlight I love from this drama that is different from what I watch in cdrama so far is that, the villain isn't an absolute villain, they actually start her backstory from the start on how and what influence her character development. I question the purpose of Snow Goddess storyline and still do but glad she was rid off in a redemption manner. I like the development romance out of building up mutual respect between Bai Jue and Shang Gu also I like that although Tianqi love Shang Gu he never tried to sabotage Bai Jue and just straightforward move on a respectful but fierce competition instead. Also dear sweet Yuemi who is in love with Tianqi knows that Shang Gu didn't love Tianqi and is not jealous of her. This is a breath of fresh air where the conflict happened because it was a problem that persist not something that was suddenly triggered. Can't wait for new episodes tonight... wish I waited it ends so that I won't have to suffer the wait but I can't hold on to wait anymore lol
