There's so bad it's good...

But this is just so bad it's amazing it ever got finished (and I love bad).
A story with plot threads that appear from nowhere then vanish just as suddenly and it feels like entire plot lines were cut n pasted during filming, a couple are lovey dovey then one is shouting / crying at the other then vice versa (I actually checked to see if I missed an episode or something) with no explanations.
But - y'know, I watched the whole thing and didn't hate it (sometimes I worry about my tastes) so if bad acting, mixed up story telling and bad sound quality are your bag then you might not hate this.
4 stars for effort :)

First 7 episodes are 9.5

Acting, chemistry, scenery, cinematography and story telling were sublime across the board and all the characters played their roles well.
Then, for me, it dropped off a cliff...
I saw all the 10 out of 10 reviews but felt once the big secret was out it just turned into a big emotional whiplash and overwrought drama.
I did this terrible thing (and legally got away with it), am crying, wandering around the village, wondering why the villagers won't look at me for what seems like ages, then they find out I'm not 'quite' as bad as being behind the wheel, then have my life saved and share my heart to then find out a thing about the Chief and my dad and spend almost an hour chastising him for taking payback without giving him a chance to explain *and* then being emotionally manipulated to do what my parents want and not having the backbone to choose my own path... (run on sentence ftw)
I felt the last 3 episodes could have been boiled down to 1 without losing any emotional punch. The first 7 were slow and methodical with rich story telling but then just felt like the last few was padded out to hit 10 episodes.

Just to balance the bad reviews

Was it problematic? I don't think so, threat of non consensual and self harm are drama, bl is life, life is drama. Some of the acting could've been tightened up, less of the main song repeat and for the love of... lose the 'funny' sound effects (or at least keep to a minimum) - and the Tart storyline seemed to be there because they wrote the original protaganists out. I feel like his part was maybe his original friend who slept with his boyfriend but (badly) recast.
I also thought there were a couple of warning signs about Dino being too possessive but then understood that was actually what Rak wanted after his previous relationship - just by a couple of things he says to Dino (calls him Daddy, warns him off Please, tells him he submits to him - paraphrased).

I thought the chemistry was off the charts, not just between the two main leads but it felt like everyone really were best friends off set and that came through in the scenes and I can live with heart felt acting that might be less professional...
Though in all honesty it was the last two specials that made me re-evaluate the first 8 episodes in a more favourable light (not seen the Vietnam episode yet).

Solid 8/10 for me.

A solid 6 for effort

Cons:
Lose the cat subplot, neither cute nor relevant (unless they were the previous visitors who failed to fullfill their mission)
Lose the degenerative disease sub plot, didn't really fit in with the comedy aspect of the show
Lose the sudden appearance of the chefs 'best'? friend who appeared in the 2nd to last episode for apparently no reason (I was fast forwarding by that point so possibly missed it)
Lose the character with the reeeaaaallly slow speech impediment, just totally cringe and NOT funny

Hair stylist and coffee girl could have been given a more interesting hate to love plot and drop his 'uncle' sub plot
The writer obviously read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Pro's:
The 2 main leads had great chemistry, chef had the greatest smile, liked his gran talking to him when making the tea
Appreciated the off beat scifi story and open ending and terrible effects (I love old 50's scifi movies so)...

Conclusion: Would make a great 2 hour fanedit movie
