For those hating on this seires without watching, heed my word :I said You are a traitor. You are a traitor! YOU…
Yes, at least watch it first before criticizing. Criticizing someone’s hard work without even watching it is a very cowardly thing to do. Downvoting other artists works is the main reason for this toxic fan wars.
I will miss you too, gotta say. I rarely watch shows while airing b/c the wait each day for the next ep is agony…
Yeah, Cheng Yi is honestly the only actor who makes me completely hooked on his dramas. MLC was my first ever C drama and the one that got me into C dramas. This is also the first time I actually bought a VIP Youku subscription instead of watching elsewhere 😅 I really hope Hero Legends comes out in 2026! I 'm going to miss you all
Finally finished all the episodes, and Vendetta of An is truly a masterpiece. It deserves all the praise it has received. The writer deserves special recognition for delivering a fast-paced, revenge-driven narrative without neglecting any character. Every character with more than a few minutes of screen presence is given a complete, strong, and reasonable storylines, something rarely achieved in most of c dramas.
All actors delivered outstanding performances. No one overshadowed the others; instead, every actor portrayed their role as if they were the main character of their own story. Even the child actors left a strong impression. Although some backstories were shown briefly, each character became memorable purely through performance. This drama undeniably provided a career boost to many of its cast members.
Cheng Yi gave an extraordinary performance as Xie Huai An. He portrayed the character with restraint and quiet strength, never resorting to overacting. His performance was remarkable. He didn’t need loud expressions or exaggerated emotions to convey depth. A single gaze was enough to communicate complex feelings. Taking on such a crucial role alongside a veteran cast is challenging, as a poor performance could have impacted the entire series. However, Cheng Yi embodied Xie Huai An perfectly without overshadowing the senior actors. He identified the core of the character and delivered it flawlessly. He didn’t repeat any of his past characters through Xie Huai An. His horse-riding style, expressions while crying, and even his smile were distinctly different from his previous roles. He perfectly portrayed Xie Huai An as someone physically weak yet mentally unbreakable. Chen Yi didn’t just act as Xie Huai An.He became him. It’s hard to imagine any other actor in this role. It was made for him.
This drama is very different from traditional historical revenge dramas that focus on sweet romance. Because of that, it naturally filtered out viewers who prefer lighthearted and slow-paced stories. This is likely why some people label it a “flop” based only on Yunhe viewership numbers.Vendetta of An requires full attention to understand. Instead of emphasizing fancy side and heroic side of chracters, the drama explores the dark side of human nature while also showing resilience and the ability to hold on to one’s true aspirations even in the darkest times. From start to finish, the story never loses its purpose.
With only 28 episodes, this drama delivers more depth and substance than many 40-episode series fail to achieve. The storyline, acting, OST, background music, and cinematography are all excellent. Vendetta of An breaks away from traditional historical drama formulas and introduces a new narrative path. It is truly a drama worth watching.
Youku Certification: "Cheng Yi's The Vendetta of An is This Year's Dark Horse"
It was initially expected that this year's historical drama season would end uneventfully, but unexpectedly, The Vendetta of An bucked the trend and became this year's undisputed dark horse. This original drama starring Cheng Yi achieved viewership ratings of over 2% on its premiere day, setting a new record for CCTV-8's prime-time slot this year. On the Youku platform, its popularity index surpassed 7,000 in just three hours after its premiere, and has now surpassed 10,000, firmly occupying the top spot on Youku's charts for suspense dramas, historical dramas, and legendary dramas.
Beyond its popularity, The Vendetta of An has also garnered strong critical acclaim! Not only are the veteran actors' performances commendable, but the younger actors' acting skills have also shown improvement. The solid and meticulous plot structure and vivid, three-dimensional characters have captivated many fans. With its strong logic and fast-paced narrative style, "The Vendetta of An has successfully achieved a resurgence for an original IP.
In its character development, *The Vendetta of An* breaks away from traditional patterns. Its protagonist, Xie Huai'an, deviates from the ideal hero archetype who is "skilled in both literature and martial arts, possessing unparalleled secrets." With mediocre martial arts skills, his survival and revenge depend entirely on his extraordinary memory, meticulous logical reasoning, and unerring insight into systems and human nature. The information network he has secretly built over ten years, combined with his knowledge, intelligence, and mental maneuvering, becomes his strongest weapon.
Outwardly, Xie Huai'an is a cunning and ruthless strategist, skilled at manipulating people's hearts. His saying, "A gentleman takes revenge without leaving a single piece of armor," reveals his decisiveness. When confronted with his uncle, Liu Ziyan, with whom he has a blood feud, he listens to no explanation and acts mercilessly. Upon learning that the deposed emperor has harmed his former servant, his eyes immediately turn cold, and his subsequent counterattack is equally ruthless, earning him the nickname "The God of War Shovels."
But behind his cruelty, hidden a heart full of warmth and a sense of morality, always showing generosity to those who intend to repent. He understood the coachman's plight and refrained from killing him, saved the mortician Pu Nichuan, and helped him realize his long-cherished wish; he is sincere and warm-hearted towards his close friends, happily cooking for them himself, and willing to endure the pain of disowning his sister in order to protect his; when the country is in danger, Xie Huai'an can temporarily put aside his hatred and ally with the Tiger Warriors against the common enemy. The combination of rational calculation and human warmth is what makes Xie Huai'an feel real and moving.
