I love the GongSun couple very much and see similarities in them to GeSun or rather they are an image of what could be, a few years ahead for our MCs. (I mean, they share core values) We don't see the couple for long but their impact is felt long after. The effect is profound on LC who regards them as parental figures I think and learns so much from the governor. The GongSuns seem to display a telepathic understanding which I think LC and AS share too. You see this link a few times, and at the family feast scene especially it is so clear and poignant. (I had a lump in my throat during this scene)
This scene is pivotal where the Governor is saying farewell to everyone and only Qin Lao understands this. Li ChangGe gets some inkling too I think, the clever girl.
GongSun compliments his wife and thanks her unashamedly in front of witnesses for her companionship, humanity and care for Yuan; he is asking her forgiveness for falling short of an ideal husband. The achievements of the governor are known far and wide yet he is so humble and lacking any conceit but is also a strong, loving man. The wife immediately understands the purpose of the feast but isn't exactly sure what GongSun intends; she responds by brushing away his thanks to say that they share the same feeling and that his goal would be her choice too. And of course we see how that promise plays out later. GongSun loves his wife but places the wellbeing of his people above that and she does not resent that for one second. I am blown away.
