These things take years and you’ll probably need to be immortal to ever see the end in your life time. You’re…
That sounds good! I'm going to watch it once I finished re-watching the drama. Also I see amazon has the eight book series so that is a fall-back if I get that far. :)

Woah, I'm taking your suggestion seriously. I found where the episodes are on youtube. I'm shocked at how much Yang Yang looks like the animated version!! But then scared if I get sucked into the story and cut off suddenly in the middle, like if they stop putting them on youtube. (I've read too many webtoon with no ending...)
They were all speaking different Chinese dialects (but only occasionally). E.g. Wang Chan was speaking Dongbei…
thank you so much! I definitely identified the Cantonese influence in Uncle Ma's voice, though I'd never heard that accent in Mandarin before. it is very charming.
Maybe try King’s Avatar… he’s so.. how should I put it.. charming in that one. If you liked Yang Yang in…
Thanks, I will give it a try. You are right that he's very charming in The Immortal Ascension, he showed a lot more sides to him than in Who Rules the World, and I already loved that one.
Can anyone tell me about the accent Wang Chan's henchmen use (and he uses), and why he says to "speak properly"? It's played for laughs and I can tell there's a slight difference, but not speaking Chinese I don't get it fully. Which dialect are they supposed to be using?
On another note, this was giving me SUCH Evernight vibes and now I learn the director was on Evernight! I wish more dramas were filmed in this style, with scenic landscapes, music, and a good mix of bombastic and quiet moments highlighting the emotional drama.
Thanks to the love in the youtube comments on episode 1 I persevered when I thought of skiping it 4 minutes in. I'm not into heavenly being and the CGI background ARE hard to get used to, however the story itself is very fun once our ML comes down to earth, as it were. I really want to find out the second half of the story, so I wonder if there's an English translation of the novel out there?
I love Yang Yang in Who Rules the World and The Immortal Ascension. I haven't actually seen him in anything else and I don't like modern dramas. Does anyone recommend any of his works? I did start You are My Glory, and my sister said to skip Love O2O. The only other costume drama I see is The Martial Universe but that has low reviews so it appears to be a skip.
If anyone suggests a modern drama that is REALLY good I may give it a try just for Yang Yang (but I've probably only finished 1 modern C-drama so it's a long shot.)
Xu Hai Qiao's role in The Immortal Ascension was KILLER! Actually before the show started I was excited to see he was in the cast, but then when his character came on screen I totally forgot about the actor and was mesmerized by the role. The whole time I was thinking this guy looks so familiar, he's really cool, I have to remember where I've seen him, but only upon finishing the show did I remember he's one of my favs! This is a complement, I was so absorbed by his scary aura that I couldn't think beyond the story itself. Looking forward to seeing what else he has coming up.
This was absolutely incredible. Though "xianxia's are extremely hard for me to enjoy, this broke all the rules of the things I dislike and stands with the likes of Evernight and Sword Snow Stride, which are wuxia. I wanted to find a bunch of similar shows that are in this genre but the majority of recommendations of already-released shows are ones I already like, such as Blood of Youth. Though it is a xianxia, I love that it focuses exclusively on our main hero and shows his ongoing cultivation journey.
If only other cultivation stories were told in this way! I'm most familiar with the genre of "cultivation" like the Mortal's journey to immortality through Korean webtoons, so found myself enjoying seeing a lot of those types of set-ups in live action. Though I'm going to try the Dominator of Martial Gods as that looks like the same genre.
I'm glad it ends with "Season 1" so there's an intention for a second season, however it appears this wasn't filmed together so we'll need to wait years! Love Yang Yang in these types of roles, my other favorite of his is Who Rules the World.
Is this actually on netflix in the US? Googling it seems to say it's on Netflix but it's not listed here and I'm not currently subscribed so I can't be sure. Just itching to watch this season 2 once I figure out the best paid option (without downloading an app to my phone or ipad).
I'd love to see Park Bo Gum in a historical. Though I hope it won't be TOO dark because some Korean historicals are too gritty for me to enjoy. However I love seeing my favorite actors in historical dramas. I was hoping PBG would be in that other martial drama (by the director of Admiral Roaring Currents) but no news about it.
Hey this headline makes me really excited! I've heard that there were many Mulan-like Cdramas over the years but I hadn't watched any of them, and wasn't aware of any newer ones (recommendations welcome). There's a lot of anticipation for this. Also I really enjoyed Fighting For Love, as twisty and surprising as that show was, where the FL is the soldier in it.
Having now watched Good Boy I'm so impressed with Oh Jung Se and this character. I already knew he was a great actor from It's Okay to Not Be Okay, but this character made me a true fan of his. Such a unique villain doesn't come along that often. He's scary and brutal but hides behind an unassuming manner and uses people's assumptions about him as a shield. Gosh I love the writer of this show so much.

There is an ongoing translation https://myldia.wordpress.com/the-tale-of-saiunkoku/
I just discovered this translation today and I'm over the moon that it exists! I real up through English summaries of books 12 or 13 five years ago, and then the summaries were so light that I stopped. Now I really hope this translator can keep going. I think in the past the full translations only made it to book 5 or 6.
How did it go for you? Did you finish it and like it? I finished Dear Honrang a few days ago and it was so dark…
You're so right about everything else seeming light in comparison! I only had time to get through episode 20 or so of Pearl girl, but I am interested in finishing it. However I did pour over the reviews of it and got some spoilers for the end, which may help you decide if you wanted to watch it. I really like both actors so I was mostly watching it for them.
Does there happen to be a good stopping point in this drama if I don't want to watch to the end? I've found a way around endings but stopping at major turning points with several great dramas.
