This xianxia romance story is quite unique among others in the same genre because it focuses on the top leaders of Gods - True god and the head of all gods and godess in the most ancient time. Thus those Gods did not much experience of dealing with unknown tribulation. They just listened and followed what the Creator instructed. The the tribulation itself was a catastrophe, so diastrous that sacrifying of a god with chaos power (generally said the head of all gods) was the only way to solve it. Since there is only 1 way for eliminating the tribulation, the end result or solution was always death of god with chaos power. Thus, by default, it ought to Shang Gu. Bai Jue changed her fate, changed the instruction of the Creator. He sticked to his princple and his determination to protect all that he loved. Even if they sat together and tried to solve the puzzle together, the requirement for eliminating the tribulation is one of them have to sacrify.
But Bai Jue also learned a lot along the way. In the beginning he tried to solve everything on his own. In the later life, he started to share his work, his plan with Tianqi.
Shang Gu also grew. In the beginning she just chose to die because of the Creator's instruction. In the end, she collected herself, seeing how Bai Jue had changed her fate and she was willing to take the gamble to ask the Creator god (father god) to return Bai Jue. It was the begging from a daughter to her father to return her husband. and because Bai Jue deserved that for what he had done

@Hala, A few day ago I saw your first comment but I don't understand it at all. Your discussion with @ArbazAkhtar_HOD gave me some more point, still the original one is unclear to me. But let's talk about what you call amnesia. I think we don't have the same view
1- in Eps 15 Shang Gu sacrified her life to save the Three realm. Bai Jue suffered "injured" (both in physical and metal sides). but then he had to fight with Xuan Yi in the big battle. I think you misunderstood the last scence of the big battle where Bai Jue was falling in the void since right after that the drama moved to the later era and you see Qing Mu instead of Bai Jue.

Bai Jue was always awoke in most of the drama (except 1000 years when he (his immortal half Bo Xuan) wanted to merge with "Qing Mu" (the 2nd half who cultivated demon power) until the final merging was successfully in the Wutong forest in eps 37/38.
After that big battle, he got severe injured but when he recovered and the God Realm was closed, he travelled everywhere to search and collect Shang Gu's dispersed pieces of consciousness (soul). He spent tens thousand years to collect enough material to surrect her from the consiousness.
Qing Mu was formed from (let's say) half of body. Originally he was just "tool man" who was used to cultivate demon power. The Qing Mu escaped the ice-cave under North Sea was that tool man with stolen some of Bo Xuan's consciousness and immortal power during the merging process.
And because of that Qing Mu did not have a clear memory how he came to the world with scattered memory. Thus that was why he thought it was a dream.
For Hou chi- resurrected Shang Gu, Bai Jue wanted her to live as an ordinary (the last wish before she disappeared in eps 15), save and sound. If he had not sealed her conciousness and spritual power source, Hou Chi would have grew up and became Shang Gu again with Chaos Power and full memory of her previous life as the one who had to protect the three realm. She would realize the Chaos Tribulation still remained and she would have taken the same choice as before. And Bai Jue plan is to trained himself to have chaos power so that he could take her duty to eliminate the Chaos Tribution. He could fulfill his responsibility as a True God (to protect three realm) as well as protect his loved one and give her a life she wanted.
What happened between Qing Mu and Houchi was unexpected and out of his control. But ultimately when completed Bai Jue returned, he sticked to his original aim to protect Shang Gu/HouChi. Awakening up Shang Gu (unsealing her conciousness) was done by Gu Jun when he retured Houchi the Power based power.

If I understood correctly you mean Houchi (with Shang Gu power, in eps 41 when she stabbed Bai Jue) in this statement .
When Shang Gu was sleeping for 100 year, Bai Jue daily visited her and he wish her to woke up after the Chaos Tribulation was eliminated. He took only her memory from the moment she completed her training in Jiu Yu until the last moment of Houchi because it would give her the most reasonable restart for a normal life without worry. She would know nothing about the Tribulation, the sad past of love as HouChi (how could he explain the existance of Qing Mu, and she would figure out later what Bai Jue had done to take her duty). From start to the end, Bai Jue was very consistent with his act and will despite some unexpected accident along the journey

The first arc is purposed for setting the foundation for:
- Shang Gu's growth from a reckless, "spoil" girl with good intention to a powerful woman with beautiful mind who is willing to die to protect unknown, ordinary people in the Three Realm
- Bai Jue's growth. In the begining he was a super cold and distant God who only worked according to rule, and knew only responsibility, he had no love and did not know how to show love. Along with Shang Gu, his emotional side was discovered and opened up by Shang Gu.
-Set up for 2nd characters such as Wu Huan, Gu Jun and others
With such characteristics background, 3-4 eps would never be enough to layout everything. Bai jue-Shang Gu's love is not suddent love (especially from Bai Jue) it took time for him to have enough contact, understood her and so dit it for Shang Gu.
Maybe it could be more compact, a few eps less but no way all can be set in 4 eps

Everyone has different difinition of love and preference for being treated by their loved one. And this Drama shows several ways of expressing love:
- Passionate, straight-forward love between Qing Mu and Houchi
-Unconditional love like Yuemi to Tianqi
-Ignorance in love: Tianqi to Shang Gu
-Love with responsibility and sacrify: Bai Jue, Shang Gu (in 1st arc)
And from start to finish, Bai Jue always stayed loyal to his loved one (Shang Gu/Hou Chi and people in three realm). He always placed his love and responsibility above himself. He had responsibility to protect the three realm as a True God, and he did not want his lover to sacrify herself to protect everyone and the three realm. So his obsession became contradict and he decided to sacrify himself to protect the people and his lover (Shang Gu).
Bai Jue and Bo Xuan knew everything, his fate in the end was death. Bai Jue once witness his loved one to become ash and disappear in front of his eyes. Actually Shang Gu was born to take that fate and duty. Thus in her opinion it was fact and reasonable because it was her job. Bai Jue experienced the pain, the heart breaking seeing such event. Shang Gu was very similar to him in love. He did not want her to experience the same thing when he died and disappear. Because he knew his death was definite solution. He planned everything to protect Shang Gu - in the life of Hou Chi, he tried to give her a safe live without burden and responsibility.
However, he did not know there were some "accident": Qing Mu, and the love & marriage to Hou Chi and then the baby. Bai Jue had never planned to "wake up" Shang Gu and make her the True God of Chaos again . As you see, when Shang Gu was in coma for 100 years, he wished that she would wake up after the Chaos Tribulation was solved. If Shang Gu knew that Bai Jue had sacrified a lot, took the duty (instead of her) could she accept it. I don't think so. And I don't think that Shang Gu was weaker than Bai Jue. She had the purest chaos power since her woke-up. She might be less powerful than she used to be in eps15 but she could be still powerful in compared with "injuried" Bai Jue with synthesized chaos power.
Shang Gu is a strong character. As Draco said, she always had strong mind and will. She was weak in term of power in the begining of the drama and as Hou Chi but her action refects a strong characteristics

As audience, we always prefer a logical, compact and meaningful story/plot. I don't think that all the chinese writers can't write such 40 eps drama into more dynamic, less annoying, repeating trope drama. However, producers have different view than audience. Their aim is to maximising the profit, rather than making the best dramas. Making a reasonable drama which can attracts significant amount of viewship and make it as "long" as possible will result in less cost per episode thus increase the revenue via broadcast, ads etc

somehow I don't understand the logic of your grade: each component of the drama got 8.5+ (except reward value) from you and overall you initially wanted to give the drama 7-7.5? The acting and music harmonied with the story. Thus I don't get why overall is lower than the lowest component point. You said you don't like the 2nd or 3rd couple but their story is a part of the overall story. Thus if you wanted to deduct the point, you should have taken that deduction in the point for story (and maybe acting if their acting was not good in your opinion either)
