While I agree that we shouldn't be consumed by hate and the past, so many kdramas hold on to this idea of forgive…
I think she does not need to forgive but she should at least let her son choose from the beginning whether he wanted to be part of this justice/revenge plan.
I totally agree!! She was the one who wanted to know the truth behind his dad's death and when he did found the…
I can understand why she burnt it, though I definitely don't agree with it. But what I cannot understand is her next lecture about the best revenge idea.
It's not incoherent. Old age/death changes people, sometimes drastically. They do out of character things....so…
What made me annoyed is that she said it as if he has misunderstood her original idea about revenge. I can understand if she has changed her opinions over time. But then she should have added some lines like: "I was wrong, the best revenge plan is/should have been ..."
I finally disagree with the mom. She really twisted her ideas/words on revenge in the last part. She ripped her son off his childhood and his career freedom to become a prosecutor so that he would help her to figure out why his dad died. Then, once he uncovered the truth and proceeded with the revenge, the mom completely turned around and criticized his idea of revenge. According to her, the best revenge plan is to forget and move on with your life. Do we miss something here? Did she expect him to spend 30+ years of his life to figure out the dirty truths and then just burn all the evidence and move on with his life? What kind of logic is this??? I will blame the writer for incoherent character development here. The mom needs to apologize her son and does all she can to protect him. She might want to burn everything out of regret/fear but should not have said that stupid line about the best revenge type. Don't waste another person's life and then go back on your own words/ideas.
I have been trying to understand her, but I cannot this time.
On ep 11: I cannot agree more when CJS admits that both she and SH are paying for their mistakes 😔
I’ve binge-watched the show since Fri. Love it, especially the FL and her children’s relationship, the fact the cheating husband does not have an upper hand and constantly lives in worry and insecurity. It’s as if the writer subtly punishes him the whole time. The comedy is the cherry on top.
I can understand your disappointment. But at the core this is a xianxia, hence the ending. The comedy is the cherry…
Thanks for the elaboration. I hope you don't find my responses as an attempt to belittle your opinions as I think we are in an open discussion where we can voice our opinions, agree or disagree with others. As you seemed to pinpoint the lack of continuity of tone in this drama as a major flaw, I shared my viewpoint regarding why the lack of continuity of tone in this particular show is an understandable issue, hence a minor flaw.
It's true that you mentioned "continuity of tone" and did not explicitly say "comedic tone". But you said "There's good comedy in the first half ... by the last episodes, the comedy is long gone, and it's like the show switched genres ... You get invested in a certain tone ...", thus one can infer that it is the comedic tone for this particular drama that you were talking about.
We have different opinions in this regard because you seem to compare a specific aspect (i.e., continuity of tone) of this show with your standard or the common standard (as you have provided many clear, perfect examples of tone continuity). On the other hand, I take into account the specific tone (comedy), the bigger context (xianxia), put myself in the shoes of the writer/director and wonder why this shift of tone happened, how could the show be executed in a more coherent tone. The answer is: it's not easy. Thus, imo, this is an understandable and minor flaw.
Since we have different approaches in evaluating certain aspects in a show, we can always agree to disagree. There is no right or wrong answer/opinion here. These are all personal evaluations, as I keep stressing, imo, not scientific facts.
Besides, while the continuity of tone may be a basic element of cinematography, I have seen outstanding shows that started on a light-hearted note but progressed to a darker, sadder or weirder tone. For example, Life is beautiful (a 1997 Italian comedy drama), Beef (a 2023 American black comedy drama television series). Not to say that TSL is on the same par with these shows, but just to highlight the point that there can be deviations from the common formula.
I can understand your disappointment. But at the core this is a xianxia, hence the ending. The comedy is the cherry…
It’s hard to continue the comedic tone for a xianxia till the end imo. But if you know a xianxia that manages the comedic tone throughout the entire drama, please recommend it to me :)
What I like about ep 12: - Bora admits that she is shallow, that she’s suck at solving her dating issues. She finally realizes her flaws and comes to terms with them. - Soo Hyuk cheered Bora up, reminding her of her strengths that she has overlooked, taking tons of photos for her. - Soo Hyuk and Yu Ri’s relationship was wrapped up neatly. They indeed owed each other an apology. Lessons from their story? Women often need verbal confirmation while men tend to think their actions are evident. - Sang Jin’s curse has been removed. It’s true that two people can be individually good but horribly together. Then, the best thing they can do is to wish each other happy. The last two cases highlight the importance of communication in relationships.
I actually don’t mind that leads may get together/confess their feelings in the last 10 mins of the show. Their flirting and friendship are enough to give me butterflies. But in return, I hope the writer shows proper character growth, that the leads learn from their mistakes, that they are complete by themselves and now they are ready to bring in another party to share their journey. All the loose ends of the side couples should be neatly tied up too. That is not too much to ask for the last 2 eps right? 🤞
This drama is crazily good. It constantly makes me wonder what would I do if I were the mother? How could I give my kid the best childhood and future while still upholding justice for my husband? How could I make sure that he can survive on his own if I would die at any time? It’s easy to criticize her choices but are there any perfect solutions?
I'm beginning to think that none of the couples in this drama really loved each other. Most female characters…
And it’s quite realistic. The FL is quite shallow and thus her circle tends to be the same. That said, I really enjoy the show (except for some thoughtless statements last week)
I was in doubt about the comeback of Yu Ri character. I thought we don't need that cliché character development. But indeed there are people like her, who wants revenge/confirmation from her ex, who likes to play the victim role and refuse to let their exes go/be happy. It's good to showcase these toxic characters so that others can avoid them. Especially, I appreciate that the writers make Bora admit that she sort of did the same with her ex. The fact that she insisted on re-writing their goodbye scene and trying to make him regret is in away the same as what Yu Ri did to Soo Hyuk. They are trying to get the validation that they were right and their exes was wrong, so that they can be confident to move on. But, true peace and confidence come from within. It was a brief moment of realization from Bora. But I am glad that at least she brought it up.
We finally get the glimpse of the issue between Yu Jung and her husband. It seems that he takes their marriage for granted. The writer makes a nice link between their marriage and the wedding of their friends to underline that couples can be happy without marriage and vice versa.
I keep wondering what is the end game for the story between Sang Jin and Uri. My guess is that they want to develop a relationship similar to that in My Mister, a kind relationship between human and human. Okay, this is a bad comparison because the depiction of their relationship here is far from that masterpiece, but I really think that drama is the source of inspiration. Sang Jin seems to have a strong desire to be cared for and giving care to others. Uri gives him both. I still dont understand why his staff and his wife treat him that way. Still I am curious how the writer will wrap up their relationship.
And the last scene gives me butterflies in my stomach again.
