From the snippets of the beginning and ending of the novel, it seems that the drama follows the main plot pretty…
1. He was curious and bored, he could hear her mind, and know shes not a chicken. He wanted to save her, and also entertain himself 2. No, never sacrifice her as a seal. It goes with his personality, he doesn't reciprocate if he doesn't think there be a future. Even as a mortal he never responded to her words, even if actions were different. With his current identity, and situation, he doesn't love her yet and also wants her to not be so sad over Xingyun. 3. He falls later, not shown in the drama yet. Love is a very strong emotion that he has not experienced before, since he's not allowed to have. Literally, acting on it will get him struck by lightning. It better be worth it...or if hes willing to risk it?
Did you read the epilogue/side stories? Theres 2 side stories, 1 of them is about her parent's love story, and the other one is a wedding between Lady Jin and her lover. At the end of the wedding, XZ proposes to SL, (they show it in the trailers, with the snowy background when he says "i can give you a grand wedding with a lot of immortals blessings"), and she responds that they better hurry because she's pregnant :)
So you probably know from the novel she was used as the last fire seal, and her dad comes at the last second to save her, and replaced her position there. She couldn't see his face because of his Phoenix fire aura, but she felt the immense sense of loss when the Abyss collapsed completely. But so much sh*t was going down what with Xing Zhi about to die, etc, it wasn't spoken about again. The drama should show the emotions better!
Im not sure how much you read so I don't want to spoil it all. But firstly, she finds out who her parents are from her Master telling her, when she inquired about her phoenix bead. She knows her dad is sealed inside, but has no feelings, as never met him. She did want to know more about her mother and where her bones are, though. Next, when she sees her dad again:
If it flows with the novel, which it has so far, its gonna be pretty boring with the push and pull until a major…
"I am not him" / acts like him "I can't love you" / keeps annoying her and follows her around "You're engaged, don't be around other men" / Is other man
Can you give a spoiler about the novel ending? Will he change his mind about Shen Li marrying someone else? Do…
They both decided the love was worth it, and he gives up his Ancient God powers to restore peace to the realms, both go back to Xingyun's yard and live happily in the mortal realm, making a full circle just like in the beginning of the story.

Honestly the marriage thing was never a real thing to him, he is so nonchalant about it. If he wanted, he could just cancel it with his authority and no one would say no. He postponed it in case ShenLi doesn't like him anymore, and both sides want to go through with the marriage. The real problem is, even if anyone were to marry ShenLi, it could never be him, since its taboo for Ancient Gods to act on emotions.
So he is currently interjecting himself in her life, figuring out both their feelings, and dealing with the aftermath later. The thing they keep saying will keep coming back, "it's not a matter of whether it is worth it, but a person's willingness to do it".

The story is mainly a love story, so I'll keep that part private. The story plot is, Divine Immortals (Heavenly side) and Demon Immortals (ShenLi side) don't like each other, since there used to be wars over who rules Heavenly realm. So demon side tried to overthrow them 1000 years ago in a major war, which caused Xing Zhi to seal a bunch of monsters in the Xutian Abyss, and made these seals to contain them, which has gotten weaker now. Currently both sides proposed a marriage alliance to further keep the peace, which is what ShenLi is running from when she met Xingyun. So now in the drama, Xing Zhi is back to make the seals strong again.
