There used to be Beasts in heaven which cultivated with the spiritual energy, took on human form, and became "Immortal" (but since they were animals that took on human form, usually referred as demons). Then way up higher in heavens, reside the most powerful Ancient Gods that were created with the world, so all beings have to revere them. So Shenli is supposedly born of Beast (phoenix), and raised with (demon) Immortals. After many military achievements, she was given a Lordship title of Lord Bicang (lit translation: Azure Sky King). It's very prestige, as in Chinese she is often referred to as "King", which is why people generally mistake her title/name for a man, since Kings are usually men.

He arranged the marriage she is running away from, and it's cuz he thought her name was manly. He thought he's marrying a demon general Lord Bicang to an immortal princess Furong, but it was all wrong. Turns out its a female general, to an immortal philandering prince, so of course she'd run away.

He established it without knowing it is her, and only realized after hearing all that about the running from marriage and found out she her real identity. He can't do anything to stop her as a mortal anyway, only the little acts he does to delay her leaving.

I think its all the cuts they had to do with the limit on number of episodes

They resolve what they need to do, and there is a closure. It's not a bad cliffhanger, but you'll want to watch more.

I like the characters so much. She's so free-spirited and direct, and him so impassive and calm. The love may seem one sided but his actions of trying to keep her, delay her leaving, and waiting for her to come back is his inability to suppress himself.

Well there are barriers to their love, like her arranged marriage, and how he isn't supposed to love. He never needed emotions before meeting her, and he was super lonely because he's the last Ancient God left. So he wanted to do the right thing by remaining passive and pretending he didn't know her, but that gets dashed when he can't control himself, like how he can't help keeping her as a mortal. They don't break up after they get together,
