Yup! they sold us the romance so well, between Sima Jiao and Liao Tingyan. Even when one side has no memory, the other will call it their "first meeting" and start over and it always works out.
when they both said to each other that they would remember each other's soul no matter what, I believe them. So I also apply that to the modern world, and you can call it another "first meeting".
I like your theory. But what about the mom? The letter the FL receives a reply at on the end of episode 7 says "Son, lets go to Shiqiao (to have fishcakes)." which is her mom's code to run away together from dad. Maybe she will find out her mom never meant to leave her behind? But how is that letter being written? What time period?

if you keep watching, they investigate into it a lot more. As of now, the Dad in episode 1, sent a letter to 1991 for Ye Haitang, the love letter. It says he wanted to save her, and the times they spent together were the best times of his life. Then he disappeared, which is the mystery in 2026. At the same time in 1991, FL wrote a suicide letter, and it got sent to 2026, and is found by the ML's daughter. It seems the time is running consecutively from there on.
Its surely presumed that the old Dad is Xun, and 1991 Xun doesn't know it yet, why he would write that to her. And its a fun watch to see how they develop, and what happens.
