right?! always weird not to see more Royal family.
it's fun to theorize, I could just be totally wrong. I forgot how much I love an original script. I've read the novels to most of the dramas and usually leads to disappointment in the dramas.

What if he's the only Gao family son that's in line to be Emperor? Seems the choice is always either NH or NR, not sure what happened to everyone else, since he's 7th and Rui is 18th Prince. Maybe all died or girls.

In dramas (and I guess real history), likely candidates to become the next King faces the most dangers. Plus NH has a powerful Gao family background. I guess Emperor feels like it would make the most believable lie if even NH believes father hates him. He at least keeps trying to keep him away, but NH forced his way back.

No not that Emperor's the writer, but that there is more to all the characters in the script outside of what meets the eye. Like they glossed over the part where she dies of poison at CGH's house during their wedding, so I feel like the evil person is from his side of the family (Empress side). Emperor keeping Nan Rui (Empress son) by his side placates that evil side, and he may be hiding his love for Nan Heng, his true favorite son.
Didn’t he else catch the admission of CGH to NH that his father had the secret of forging weapons and since…
My own theory is that Nan Heng is the intended target, Empress died trying to save the kid, Emperor is pretending to hate him and banish him to protect him. Aint no smart Emperor think Nan Rui is gonna be the best choice for a king.
it’s crazy cause I was so excited to watch this, but I just couldn’t get into it
Depends where you're coming from! You might need a mood. This drama is fairly low angst and simple, one couple, one type of case (villain), all the way through. A lot of us stayed for the main CP, because it really delivers their story
