Completely different! It's so angsty and full of longing and tragedy. The biggest saviour is really the growth of Zhao Liying's' character and her chemistry with LGX.

Walking out after the final battle he says "Ah Li lets go home and I'll cook for you" which is in response to every time SL said "I miss you, I want to eat your cooking" (ep 8) and her death battle where she misses his cooking again (ep 23). Both of them dream of the same thing when gravely injured/dying, a simple life with each other. (AWW!) 2. Scene where XZ compares himself to a cuckoo bird, making himself "similar" to SL. Cuckoo and phoenixes are both birds, hence the joke. He says he's vomiting blood with every sentence, like a cuckoo bird's cry to its lover. (This could be more poetic, but I am not familiar with this cuckoo/phoenix analogy, if referenced to a chinese saying or poem or something) 3. The divine light comes and SL was happy XZ is recognized as an Ancient God to the very end, but cries when she says "But I will never see you again" because she realized that when AG dies, his energy is spread across the realms forever, never to reincarnate. 4. SL's pregnancy was hinted early in the last episode: SL who is always unbothered by cold, has a normally "hot" body, but she's overheating throughout Ep 39, always fanning herself. She normally eats light/healthy food, but now eating extra spicy hotpot and chili sauce. Playing mahjong and always winning is a superstitious sign of pregnancy. 5. In most xianxias, the theme of "falling in love = disaster to all realms" is common, causing ML/FL to be against/avoid each other, but what is uncommon is two understanding leads that support each other's cause and responsibilities, whilst still falling & being in love. No one cares for them, but they care for each other (example: XZ treating SL as a woman, and SL protecting his friends spirit tablets and his last remaining memories of his friends because he'd be sad to be forgotten). - YESSSS I AGREE THATS WHY THIS XIANXIA IS DIFFERENT

Currently airing is the youku variety show, Mystery in a Box. Other than that, seems like he got a lot of ads and comercial deals, which is good money and exposure in China. I think he's always been fairly picky about dramas/movies, so I'm not surprised.
