There were times it would have made much more sense it he’d said he had suspicions but was looking for evidence instead of he knew all along.

Always taking care of the family business, always expected to be perfect, constantly under threat. Add falling in love and seeing his treacherous ex resurrected only to threaten his new love to the mix. Poor dude so stressed he started smoking. He needs a break.
