Luxury overpowers everything
After overcoming my initial disappointment, I was about to rate this drama 7/10. Then the last 30 minutes happened and we're back to a kind 6/10. I wouldn't blame you if you rated it less.
The only reason I would recommend watching is if you like stories revolving around luxury, especially if they hold a sliver of social commentary. Because until the last epsiode where they dragged the whole ship down, the drama would make you doubt whether Sarah was wrong or right about what she did. Was she really that bad?
The concept is intriguing but has no angle to tell it from, because the storytelling is weak. While each episode tells one part of Sarah's story from a different character's perspective, apart from that character being affected there is no reason why it has to be them telling it. Whether the scenes were told by those affected by Sarah, Sarah herself or an omnipresent narrator, it wouldn't matter. The flashbacks were too consistent in their way of portraying Sarah, her company and the people around her to come from different people.
It wouldn't make sense that these characters freely spill their story the way they did nor that they would tell it in such a manner. If it was really the characters speaking, they would have embedded it into their own lives, how she affected everything around them as well. But while it was the characters initiating the scenes shown, they revolved around Sarah entirely. Everyone else was just a side character next to her, not bringing more to the table than the role they had for Sarah. The story was told from their perspectives to keep the viewers in doubt about what truly happened, since none of them held any inclination to tell the truth.
It's just that I wasn't bothered to wreck my head which parts were true and which ones fake. Because I didn't care about Sarah. I didn't care about what really happened. Nobody of the characters cared, either. And whether some parts of it were true or false, it wouldn't matter to either the story or the investigation.
Plot-wise, eight episodes were almost too much to tell a story that could fit onto one page. It would have needed something to uncover, something to make it interesting, but that's where I got disappointed the most. After episode two I was already covering my eyes as I'd seen enough plotholes. I already knew how the plot would go and how it would end.
The camera work was weird as well. Harshly cut, only zooming in on luxury items or pretty faces but never any other details. I rarely notice camera angles and cuts but something just felt so off. Does this drama want us to dive into Sarah's life of luxury and mystery, or does it want us to feel uncomfortable, watching from the outside biting our nails? I couldn't tell the drama's intention.
Apart from truly great acting especially from the female cast, there was barely anything else that left an impression on me. Because while eight episodes were way too much for the plot, they weren't nearly enough for the characters. There wasn't enough room to dive into the characters' emotional reactions, their motives, the consequences they faced. What was the point of Sarah's goals and intentions? Hints on that are so subtle that I'm assuming it was supposed to stay a mystery. But neither of the other characters had anything to tell either. They were all just tools in Sarah's toolbox.
I'm not Bob the Builder, I don't care much about toolboxes. I also don't care much about luxury and hoped for it to be more of a general setting than the main theme.
And if there is one thing I have seen far too many times, it's incompetent police. They are always incompetent.
So, why did I enjoy this enough to finish watching? Because it was so beautifully pointless that it was an easy watch. I wasn't invested emotionally, I wasn't invested mentally. I wanted to see if I was right about all the things I thought I could predict. I devoured Sarah's determination and intelligence.
There's a lot to analyze if you want to. There's a lot of pretty things and luxury as well as ugly facades and lies. There's a moral of the story in something that's otherwise scattered and pointless. But if you don't care from the beginning, this drama holds nothing to make you care.
