I did a bit of mini-research on this, But in short, BL is usually written by women and for women,
The reason they took romantic series and replaced the woman with a man is often quite obvious, like in this series, where the man is very feminine, hesitant, insecure .
Women seem to prefer seeing themselves within the relationship without the stereotypes and limitations of gender. That may also be why, in BL, they often never explicitly say that the man is “gay”

There’s a lot more to it, but I find it frustrating that they’ve reduced the number of normal straight romance series. It’s not that they don’t exist, but the female characters are completely different from what they were 10 years ago.

I wouldn’t define the series as BL at all. It’s a gay series, and it’s definitely not a typical Japanese series. I appreciate the writers.

I think the production could have been more interesting and visually appealing. The color palette is very dark and depressing, and the older main character looks tired and sad all the time. I personally prefer BL, but it’s still a good series for people who are looking for more gay series and less BL.

The episode went by quickly, as usual, but I think they dragged the tennis match out a little too much.
Also, the conflict between the fathers became a bit too much. Using their kids again and again for the sake of pointless, unintelligent battles...

This series just didn’t make me want to watch episode 7, and somehow I tried watching it and came to the conclusion that I might not even watch the final episode... It’s just so boring. I watched the first episode again, and it’s so adorable.

The casting is perfect, because when Sui puts on the mask, his eyes smile, and it’s incredibly charming. He also has the ability to convey so much pain just through his eyes, which says a lot about his acting ability, because even when he’s deeply grieving, you can really feel it.

I also usually don’t like cute or feminine characters at all, but I think he’s genuinely an excellent actor and portrays the character in a very authentic way. It feels real, rather than like one of those caricatured or grotesque characters.

As for the “weirdness” people are talking about, I don’t really find it weird. I assume it’s people who don’t really understand Japanese culture or their shows.

And even if some of the situations are exaggerated or taken to extremes, there’s still an emotional depth to it that you mostly find in Japanese shows.. The fact that he hides who he is is something people can relate to. not because he’s gay, but because he feels excluded and unable to fit in.

I don’t think there’s a Japanese BL series I haven’t watched. I’ve seen them all, and I’ve never seen anything like this before.

Chinese series really like violence. But Japanese romantic series in this style are considerate.
