LSS still had the evil bone and she didn't have the ability to withstand the evil bone essence. To do it, she had to cultivate through the heartless way. That meant abandoning the notion of love. If she acknowledged TTJ, there was a risk of the evil bone going back to him and TTJ's identity discovered. That would mean all the heartbreak was for nothing. Her asking him to atone was to push him away.
LSS didn't have it any easier than TTJ. Even though it looks like he was suffering alone, she was physically tormented by the evil bone and emotionally from denying her feelings.

I agree. It is toxic, but the beauty is the growth of TTJ and their relationship. By no means are the main leads perfect, but that makes the characters more real.
