Still hated jingyang for his debauchery past and princess xiyang for her misdirected anger over jingshi. Jingyang deserved that ending, still it was heartbreaking.

One can argue by your logic that, even she tried to run away with the children. For a child to decide, he or she should be able to understand the consequences. They were, what 7 and 3? If what she wanted was for them to choose, she should've waited till they came of age. And moreover ml seems like brainwashed by her. Children tend to be with their mother more, than their father. And she took advantage of that over ml. Ml not wanting the empire rooted from his anger over his father killing his mother.
