My explanation is remember in episode 1 when he accidentally killed feng yin? Their soul essences intertwine and at that moment it meant their fate were linked so in a way no matter if its Ah Yin or Feng Yin what he loves is her soul. The birth of Feng Yin was against the nature rule of there can only be one phoenix at a time to begin with so arguable it was fate she would be destroy (her birth challenged the original balance of the realms) and all gods need to go through trials to become a “better god”. (Don’t know if I’m making sense lol it’s quite hard to explain as not all languages translate their meanings perfectly)
Ah Yin was only able to be born because of that tiny soul fragment of Feng Yin (phoenix feather we saw). During the war many years ago her tribe was wiped and Ah Yin and her sister was entrusted to Gu Jin’s master by their mother. Unfortunately Ah Yin and her sister were polluted/ poison by the demon essence along with that their species were naturally born with a short lifespan (50 years), together that means their lifespan was shorten to about (10 years) so that brings the dilemma of whether to let them be born and experience a brief existence or just let them remain asleep forever, they decided to leave the decision to fate. Ah Yin and her sister was placed safely in the forest (the one Gu Jin was locked in for timeout as punishment) and we clearly saw fate wanted Ah Yin to be borned.
