I do feel that this is a gay story, and don't share your need for unambiguous dialogue, if only because ambiguity is often the starting point of queer stories, especially in countries like Japan or Korea where being queer is not as easy as in my own. But i see what you mean, and i like that the show afford us the occasion to have this kind of discussion.
There is a high level of emotional intimacy between these men. I see a lot of people in the comments obsessing over kiss/no kiss, as if that's all there is to a relationship between two men. It's lame, and a bit insulting as a gay guy. I don't know if it can qualify as a "BL", but it's a well written, well acted story about love, longing and growth.
