if that nonexistent step brother of mine was adopted legally either one of the parent getting married to one of my parent or adopted legally through documents then yes, I would call him brother but in this case they are not. Yuan is just a boy that Qian found on the streets, no blood connections or bound legally through documents. if Qian never took Yuan home, they would be complete strangers with no connections whatsoever. Plus when I watched this series, I dived into it thinking they would end up as lovers so the thought of incest did not even cross my mind. I knew Yuan would start looking at Qian with different eyes from a very young age. I have watched this series over 9 times in the past five months and have read the novel twice and it is one of the best masterpieces. It was done so phenomenally in all aspects, the actors were also very talented unlike so many bl dramas nowadays where they care about the intimacy and nc scenes more than the story or development. I guess we will never understand each other's standpoints, for me, this has nothing to do with incest. they were strangers who found each other in a tough time, became each others' support and lifted themselves up with the help of each other. they depicted love so beautifully.

How is it that you gave “Stay With Me” 9.5 rating and this 3.5? It doesn’t sit right with your “incest-y tone” because in Stay With Me, their parents do get married and they literally become step-brothers…. Whereas in Unknown, they aren’t related by blood or by their parents getting married to each other. While it is true that they spent certain amount of their lives as ‘brothers’ it doesn’t come even close to incest,,,, cuz for it to be incest, you have to be blood related. I think it would be more appropriate to say their fate brought them together in an unusual way…. I mean people even in real life meet their destined ones or their lifelong partners in a strange manners as well (even more stranger than what we see in this series). I just don’t understand how people see this as incest? From episode 1 to 12, never did I ever thought of the word incest. It was only after I came to Mdl and checked the comments did I see people complaining about it being incest! You could meet someone whom you see as a sister/brother but as things go and you grow closer, it is possible for that relationship to change into love there is nothing strange or wrong about it.
I think it’s more about the mindset you watch the series with. It saddens me to see such a great drama with perfect acting and very intriguing story to be labeled as “incest-y”

The main and most important thing about this series for me was that two broken souls found each other and they became so entangled that they are unable to live without one another other. I don’t think this is some kind of illness or sickness of the mind to be treated… I think it’s more about finding someone to live through the ups and downs of life together, taking care of one another, being by each others’ side. Life is unfair and very cruel…. To be able to find someone you can trust and be with is such a miracle (again they do not exude incest vibes, they just happen to meet each other in such way but they are in no way related to one another) relationships change. Best friends can become enemies, enemies can become best friends…. Just as someone whom you saw as brother and sister can change into someone you dearly love and protect.) again they are not related to be counted as incest.
