I enjoy watching this drama, though I haven't watched PA. The flashbacks help me to understand some major scenes…
I’m not saying you have to watch PA to understand it. I’m saying they could have done a better job with the flash back. They know they have a bunch of audience that have watched season 1, instead of wasting so much time on flashbacks, just condense it to 1 large flashback and then spend time more eps on the newer content.
They wasted too much time on the past instead of focusing on newer stuff. Like why bother flash backing to the same content multiple times to reveal the bits and pieces every time. Like there’s no need for suspense, if people wanted to know about the main leads relationship in depth they can watch PA. Just do 1 large flash back that sets up the major plot and relationships of main lead and then move on with new content. This flows much better than what the drama opted for.
Exactly my thoughts... and I think the drama doesn't deserve the low ratings, just because they keep comparing…
Comparison is inevitable because this is a sequel. Just like how there was comparison of PA with the novel. No one expects it to be the same it’s been 9 years, like folks have been begging for this drama for 9 years. So you have folks like me that envisioned what could be in this sequel and have read the novel. People were basically given a long time to marinate ideas of how this sequel will be.
The reason why the criticism for all the actor/actresses is PA when filmed, none of the actor/actress were newbies with the exception of a couple of support characters. All the actor were seasoned or have been main leads in pretty popular dramas. Aka the production company was not playing around, like it must not have been cheap. PA is very complex drama with a lot of character development, Rebirth the sequel is basically when majority of the characters development has been set in place. PA had a lot of main leads and all the main leads even some supporting character left deep impressions on people, like some came out to become main leads in popular dramas or caught public attention.
Now since this is a sequel, you have all the main leads if you watched the PA. You’ll know they went thru hell, none of these characters had an easy time. They are all complex characters, it’s not just hate or revenge, or righteousness. It’s the sad reality of war and politics that put them to the positions they were in. So as sequel you’re picking up from that, it’s not where normal dramas do where they build up a characters its the character development is already pretty much set in stone. Unfortunately I cannot look at the current Chu Qiao and Yan Xun, and see the continuation of complexity I saw when watching PA. Like nothing of the current Chu Qiao screams someone who almost died several times, despair of everyone of her allies dying cause of her, or even someone who clawed her way up from slavery to her current standing.
So since it’s picking up from PA, they should have known the bar for the acting level bar is gonna be high and they shouldn’t have skimped around with the casting. Hence why people have so much complaints. We went from a whole cast of seasoned actors to a bunch of newbies with a few seasoned actors, of course people are gonna rain hell. Like before filming when they announced the cast people had a lot of complaints about the casting, and now when the drama is released, the directing and screen play isn’t measuring up too, yeah unfortunately it’s gonna get even more complaints. Like the excuse of them being new and can’t act can’t even hold up here, because people knew this is gonna be a hard role to act.
Yeah based on the novel, pretty much everyone dies but some of the main leads
Yan Xun, Zhuge Yue, Chu Qiao. I think Xiao Chun er and her bro survived too, but don’t really remember since it’s been awhile since I read the novel. Prince Ce definitely dies though.
I enjoy watching this drama, though I haven't watched PA. The flashbacks help me to understand some major scenes…
I’m saying this after watching up to episode 25. The prequel contains a lot of info, it’s 50/60+ episode long drama. Not something that mini flashbacks can cover. Like you most likely get the majority backstory of the characters from these flashback, but from folks who have watched the PA. Who knows the depth of these character build up, these flashbacks are clearly not enough.
Like the hatred that YANXUN had and his moral dilemma of how he went from a happy going guy to a revenge driven guy. It’s definitely enough for folks who are watching for the first time to know he’s revenge driven because his whole family got killed, but if you never watched PA you will probably never understand the depth of Yan Xun character build up. What Yan Xun went thru was much more grueling than what the flash backs cover.
One of the main reason why PA was very loved for its character development. Every character well fleshed out, the characters were not just black and white. Characters were human with back stories that made you question life and morals. And it wasn’t just the main characters it was the side characters as well.
Like from the way the drama is directed and playing out. You can definitely like watch it and it’s ok, but like since they just opted for mini flashed backs it’s basically like taking the meat out of the story. Since newer audience like you never watched PA, instead of a build up of understanding how characters became the way they are, you just get verbal dialogs. Which is technically enough, but doesn’t really get you immersed in the story plot.
I totally understand how PA doesn’t capture newer audience after all it is like 9+ year drama lol. The quality and directing direction probably doesn’t fit in with the newer styles. Also PA is a lot more warfare/politic grounded too. However this is basically that 1 drama that people still talked about for the last 9 years and have been begging for sequel for, so do expect some comparison.
lol I unfortunately had very high expectation for this drama and so do feel disappointed, since I watched the first one. Though objectively if there was no precedent, this is most likely an ok drama. Nothing against the characters, I just think the directing and story telling is very bad. Like some of these shots are just ruining the drama for me.
The flash backs in the beginning is very confusing. Like if I didn’t watch the prequel, I would have probably been so confused as to what happened lol. Like if you’re gonna do flash back might as well do a full flash back of everything covering the main plots in the beginning. Not giving mini snippets every here and there, with little inferences especially when the prequel had a lot of plot lore.
Also what’s up with face zoom up shots. Like the director just loves these face zoom up shots, like it’s suppose to show how majestic they are, there are plenty of shots you can do to make them look majestic, but zoom up and whatever shot they use is not it. It just makes the character looks funny and really highlights all of the characters facial expressions and their shortcoming. Almost every shot when someone’s talking face zoom up shot and load the dramatic music. Like it’s one thing to use these shots if they are speaking to a lot of people like announcement but like a 2 people conversation, another face zoom up. Like what is this director trying to show, like if your trying to show romantic emotions, maybe zooming out and letting the ambiguity in the air get me swooning, but zooming in on their face, I don’t really see any romantic anything except their stunned face. It pretty much highlight an actors lack in acting skills cause their expressions are not there.
It’s unfortunate that there is a comparison otherwise I would probably be enjoying this a lot more than I am now.
I feel robbed. It’s fine that they replaced bite with the hug. But where was the slow mo, the stare down, the long hug, and him even kissing the daos head. Like I like how it flows, but I feel like we be robbed of like tension opportunities that were just turned into dialogues in a passing if you weren’t paying attention. It’s still good, because of the chemistry just want that extra kick. Their story should have been longer TT-TT
Can someone tell phuwin role in this , does he have little screentime in this or not ? I never watched this series…
It depends on how the they plan to adapt the story. However phuwin plays the 13th prince which based on the original is one of the main allies for both FL and ML. He plays a key role for some major plots. In the Chinese version since it was like 36 episodes long, he was one of the characters that had long characterizations and side plots. He shows up as much times as the ML and FL since he was good to both. Looking forward to see how phuwin acts as him.
wish it has a more satifying ending compare to the kdrama
I hope they keep the tragic ending. Makes it more impactful, also the kdrama one actually toned it down quite a bit. The Chinese drama and the original novel is even more tragic and cruel. If they are following the original Chinese drama and novel, expect to cry buckets.
The kdrama version was good, but I pick the Chinese one over the kdrama, mostly because of how well they built up all the prince characters and delve deeper into their love interest. Hence making the tragedy even more tragic.
^yeah I think out of all the c novels I read, this had the most natural progression as a relationship for historical…
Honestly same, I vaguely remembers she gets pregnant pretty early in the story too, I’m watching the behind the scenes and I don’t see that. They might have changed it, or haven’t filmed it yet.
Im wondering how the charcater dev of the ML will be cause politically & romantically might be super intense?…
^yeah I think out of all the c novels I read, this had the most natural progression as a relationship for historical and transmigration. They were both adults (FL was adult mentally) and they acted appropriate for their age and experience. I like how there was no cheesy/cringe scenes or too much on the cutesy scenes. It was one of the reasons why I remember this novel so well. However though it’s also because it doesn’t have these kind as of scene that makes it kind of boring for some. Like there’s no like twist every so often, everything flow natural. All actions has reasons for it to happen, and our two main leads are no perfect people where things always go their way. Villains are not always dumb and are actually obstacles.
Drama most likely gonna be very heavy on plot and on the relationship between the two leads
OMG!?!?! How did I miss this?!?! I used to read this novel and loved it! I couldn’t finish it though cause the English translations were never completed and MTL just wasn’t good enough at the time. Glad it’s getting an adaption and I can finally get some sort of ending at least. It’s Bai Lu and Ryan Cheng, this is gonna be so good! Looks like China is adapting all the popular historical stories.
I like how everyone is debating on who the main cast would be and really hopefully they choose someone that would do this novel justice. This and Star general is literally the top novels.
I originally had some thoughts on who would play XJX, cause like someone said he’s described as playful, handsome, yet beautiful. While I feel a lot of actors are handsome, not really a lot of them make me think they’re beautiful (my opinion ofc). Until I came across moonlight mystique Ao Rui Peng. Damn was soo beautiful yet so handsome. Think he could be added to the pool of potential male leads. In his other roles he acted in different playful characters too, though not really cool yet playful. So would be a sort of challenge for him.
Wait...So everyone except ML and his son will die?! I knew about FL dying while giving birth but not about all…
The official never really clarified who her husband is. But some people in the comments are saying in the drama her pairing is with Zhao Yi Bo, I’m a guess they saw some behind the scenes pic. In the anime, DongFang Qin Lan was a kid, and not a whole teenager as shown in the drama lol.
Wait...So everyone except ML and his son will die?! I knew about FL dying while giving birth but not about all…
Yeah everyone in the mask group dies, the him you see with some white hair and black hair is him after the whole group died. I won’t spoil too much, but it’s a story that meant to end in a tragedy, don’t start the story expecting it to be HE, cause it’s not. In Red Moon, they already talked about it being a tragedy and I don’t think they plan on changing it. The only one we know for certain survived was FL sister, who gave birth to the ML in Red Moon. Still up in the air how the drama might or might not change things.
The next drama to come out is sword and beloved, which is focused about their son and will have an older him in it. The older him does not seem to nice based on the trailer.
Why so short? The episodes have around 30 minutes and there are only 36 😢
I believe their story is the shortest one out of the three since this basically served as the backstory for the other two. In fact if you read the manhua or watch the anime, I don’t believe it has much mini plots as the drama currently has (could be wrong), so the script writer definitely added extra bits which I am currently liking. Especially the interactions between the 2 leads.
No - this is actually the prequel by chronological order. If you watched the other drama you’ll get spoiled about the ending of this one. This drama is about the Aunt and mother of red moon pact’s ML.
