I remember going through an interview where Xiao Zhan pointed it out. It was some allergy. If you look closely, its lot worse in few previous episodes.

Am I the only one who didn't notice any bruise on Wangji's lips though? I know about Wuxian's and I remember an interview where Xiao Zhan mentioned him having an allergy or something but I seriously don't recall Wangji's. !^^

In the very last scene, WangJi comes back for him. They didn't show him but the voice and Wuxian's expressions were enough of the hint.

They needed a basic plot line, a purpose in the past. There isn't much about Wei Ying's past at the beginning so they had to introduce something. In my opinion, it wasn't that bad and it merged with the original story line perfectly.
And for the love of the story, characters and the actors I ignored the shortcoming and enjoyed it a lot.

This dramas has BEST OSTs in my opinion. Based on the characters rather than being the average songs.
