I really enjoyed the untamed but I couldn't help but be bothered with scenes like the ones mentioned in your article…
Yep! These are things a lot of people will notice subconsciously, even if they don't know to put their finger on WHY they feel that way. And the more you watch drama, the more you'll get a feel for it because your brain gets used to certain "tricks" filmmakers make and on the flip side, it also recognizes when the logic it has been accustomed to gets broken (or the likes)! :D Thank you so much for reading~

Haha thank you! I’m hoping there won’t be too much backlash and people will see I’m not criticizing The…
Haha, thank you so much for the kind words! My field is actually originally writing and scrip writing (this is how I got to film studies haha) so I'm happy you think it's not too shabby :D As for more "technical articles", I definitely plan to write more in the future. When I see something I really want to talk about, I usually can't help myself lmao Have you checked my article on lighting? I used the Rurouni Kenshin movie (which is a movie I think is both well made and just a good movie haha), so if you liked this one you might like that one as well :D

This was so interesting to read! And I agree that if those shots were filmed differently as you suggested, those…
I really love the series too, I just sometimes sit in a corner and cry about what it COULD'VE been if the production was higher (although, of course, budget constraints are a thing and kudos for them for managing the create the phenomenon they did and capture so many hearts with what they had)

I have always gone *meh* at those 3000 people scenes but I didn't think much about it. this helped me get an idea…
There are a lot of filming “mistakes” that bother casual watchers subconsciously without knowing why haha the brain recognizes something is not tracking but it doesn’t necessarily know to explain it to itself, you know? Some will feel it stronger than others, some won’t mind, and some will go to film school lmao
And yes, this could have theoretically been solved pretty easily but I assume there were also a lot of budget constraints and circumstances that also forced their hands to save on time and money, as this didn’t have a high budget. Still, sometimes I *imagine* what these scenes could’ve been like with tightly controlled and planned shots and get sad lol

I love reading articles where people take their knowledge and apply it to something. Probably why I like reading…
I try to separate a “good” movie from a “well made movie” bc I think there are definitely cases where there is good acting, story and characters but the production is just not there. Those are still good movies IMO, even when they aren’t well made, but I’ve had people in my degree that were super clear about what makes a good or bad movie and who were very very critical, so I understand your coworker’s brother a bit too haha
And I’m like you - I love reading/talking with people with different areas of expertise. Whenever we study something, we tend to suddenly see things differently based on the knowledge we’ve gained and it’s a lot harder for “outsiders” to understand it or see it as clearly (or care as much lol). That’s why I think it’s important and interesting to have those conversations haha let’s you peek into a different world, you know?

this article is very interesting, thank you for sharing this perspective! i never thought about this haha
Thank you so much for reading! I am happy I was able to introduce a new outlook on drama watching haha ^_^

The Untamed is by far my favorite drama and I've rewatched it 4+ times but I have to agree with the things you…
Thank you so much for reading and keeping an open mind! I love the characters of the untamed and while I am more partial to the plot of the novel, I really enjoyed the story of the live action too. It was just the production that sometimes really distracted me, as you said about you and history haha I also think the untamed / grandmaster of demonic cultivation is a fascinating multi media franchise and I have considered doing actual academic research about it because of how much I love discussing it, the changes between adaptations and what they mean culture wise and etc, so I am definitely a fan of the series even as I criticize it haha

Wow this was fun ^_^ hope there's a part 2
I try to do similar things whenever I notice something interesting in a drama and I’m on a uni break haha so hopefully I will be able to bring more filming discussions to MDL in the future! Thanks so much for reading! :D

Thank you so much for the kind words, your comment is so encouraging! Knowing I was able to help you bridge the gap between what you felt and WHY you felt it is wonderful, it makes me so happy ^_^

Well, I love this show so much, but but the editing and framing are just... bad sometimes. You cannot even trick…
Yes, the show I think could’ve been a lot tighter in terms of the production itself, but there are probably a lot of constraints we aren’t aware of :/ still, I really enjoy thought exercises like this, and this article has been living rent free in my brain for months so I had to write it haha

Oof, she could probably take me and my film knowledge in her small pocket haha it’s super brave to ask someone like her for movie opinions but probably super informative and insightful! I bet she brings a different perspective than most people expects - makes me want to have a convo with her haha

Honestly, hearing this makes my day as the whole purpose of this was to maybe show others a bit of a different perspective on the dramas we all love ! Just hearing these words from you has made writing this article worth it! :D

It's always interesting to see the perspective of someone who's a professional and studied film. All these details…
That’s how it is for most viewers! Let’s just say I’m not that fun to watch movies with, the only grace is that my friends are also film students, otherwise no one will ever go to the movies with me xD

I agree. It's like in Chinese harem dramas, the emperor is always emphasized to have 3000 ladies in waiting. It's…
That sounds like way too many women to entertain, poor emperors xD It’s a bit sad that most cdramas aren’t able to use these tricks I mention here to build up their numbers artificially tho, I assume it’s due to the way it’s film (probably multi cam and only a limited time on those sets, etc)

I understand where you're coming from and why this upsets you, but at the same time I don't really think it's…
While I agree with you that it’s not a big deal for the casual watcher (I.e. someone who studied it and can’t turn off their brain) and doesn’t need to be (this is just using it as an example for a short film lesson), I disagree that 3000 people weren’t meant to be there - wei Ying is framed for killing 3000 people, definitely, but there WERE 3000 people there. Wei Ying himself acknowledges it within the scene, not just all the assholes in the other sects lol
