One of the Best Scripted Revenge Saga in a long time!!
Even time, he loses someone close to him, he goes crazy. And whenever he goes crazy, he comes out stronger! There are very few shows that leave you feeling indulgent, every moment is a worthwhile experience. When I first started watching this thriller, I thought it was a regular revenge saga. Xie Huai An seems like a regular guy, utterly normal and harmless & yet underneath that veneer, he hides an intellect and intelligence that bought down an empire. This show has caustic elements that are unbelievably shocking; it’s like peeling off layers of onion and revealing new details. Just when you believe that Xie Huai An has achieved his end goal, he begins a new journey of retribution. The guy hasn’t known a single moment of peace since his clan fell. He has planning since decades, waiting and seeking revenge. And yet, he can’t rest because the nation suddenly falls prey to outside predators. From weaving a single game of retrieval to protecting his country, Xie Huai An does the unimaginable. He is always two steps ahead and the acumen leaves you stunned. Cheng Yi mesmerizes with a commendable performance that leaves you stunned. He doesn’t fight with swords; his words are powerful enough to make or break the game!

One of my favorite watch this year!!
I didn’t know watching a clueless guy handle economic crisis could so entertaining! If this show was only centered around the main leads, it would have failed. Sure, the story lies heavily relies on Kang Tae Poong’s journey of self discovery. But it is his interaction with the other characters, namely the supporting cast that makes the storytelling crisp & refreshing. Everything about this show is nostalgia, brings back memories from the time when I was a kid and all kinds of new tic tacs were introduced-like pagers and mobile phones. The show plays on those feelings while adding its own incentives. The storyline focuses on the economic crisis that Korea and how it adversely affected the same range firms. The main lead’s journey through those difficult times, as he tries to save the company, his father founded are praiseworthy. He is a horticulturist, so technically he has no idea about how trading works. So, he starts from ground zero, fumbles along the way as he learns the ropes of the trade and finds a firm standing; carrying along his father’s legacy.

The Best Follow up to the Earlier Two Seasons!!
Onto its third season and this show is still the best written investigative thriller in recent times! In the current timeline, our dynamic duo return to Chang’an alongside their motley group of friends, under the premise of delivering the golden peaches offered by the Kingdom of Kang. Obviously, the peaches are just a bold front for the Emperor to extend his intelligence network while he endeavors to test Lu LingFeng’s loyalty. The Emperor though acts wiser and more mature now, is adept at handling the court affair; but at times, he is like a lonely kid, seeking attention from his aunt, who was once a mother figure to him. To avoid being caught in this family drama, Lu LingFeng chooses a lesser known position as the Yongzhou Judicial Official, so he could stick to investigating cases instead. As always, Su Wuming follows him and is temporarily appointed as the Scholarly Official there. The other members are also promoted to better positions, and yet they assemble as one unit whenever duty calls. The premise for this show still remains, but the context has slightly changed!

Some Romances Are Truly Unbelievable!!
Adaptations are a risky business, because you never know if they would work or not! This was my first time watching a show featuring Victoria Song. As soon the credits rolled by in the first episode, she was atop a bridge performing the sword dance. I have seen numerous women perform sword dances in various dramas and yet Chu Yu’s performance was unique. No wonder Wei Yun fell in love at first sight. The show strongly hinges on the premise of fighting for love; because our main couple go through hell before finding their happiness. It is literally a fight against the monarchy and age-old societal prejudices. The main highlight of this show that it features three other love stories alongside the main leads and each of them are as unique as the mains. The drama adheres to its base concept until the last episode and delivers a romance that is swoon worthy!

Quite Disappointing to be Frank!!
What happens when suddenly one day, you end up inheriting a fortune & there are too many people who want you dead! This was one of those shows that starts in a magnanimous manner; the story seems gripping interesting in the first two episodes. So, you expect some classy vengeance scripted by the supposedly daredevil female lead. She tries, but in the end, the script nosedives and you are left disappointed. The biggest letdown about this show is its inconsistency, like it doesn’t know where it is exactly headed. The story focuses on Kim Yeong Ran, who is hired by the Gaseong Group Chairman to first become his bodyguard and later, a contractual wife. He alongside his very competent lawyer, Lee Don even have a contingency plan ready for Yeong Ran’s survival after the Chairman’s staged death. The catch is that Yeong Ran gets his family fortune in exchange for seeking revenge on his very creepy stepdaughter, Ga Seon Yeong. The said stepdaughter is more conniving and competent than all the antagonists in the Korean drama industry. That was possibly the only good thing about this show; it had an accomplished villain, because Seon Yeong is goddamn scary.

A Somber Legal Drama That is Worth Exploring!
Legal dramas are becoming a more frequent trend in Korean industry, but there are very few that are actually worth exploring! An ensemble casting doesn’t always mean that the show will be good. It entails a diligent storytelling and a strong backdrop with intriguing characters. JTBC’s Saturday- Sunday offering “Beyond the Bar” encompasses all three with a dash of romance. The cases were handled professionally which is obviously the order in Korean law firms. The show basically revolves around rookie lawyer, Kang Hyo Min as she joins the popular law firm, Yullim and meets her immediate superior, Yun Seok Hun who is a stoic & disciplined man. While most shy away from joining his department because of his strict demeanor, Hyo Min willingly takes up the job because she wants to learn from him. And she does, because in due course of time, they became proficient partners both in personal & professional life. The show skims over the romance to focus more on the legal cases they handle. I guess that’s a relief because romance in a legal drama doesn’t make much sense!

He gave up on everything for her, but couldn’t give up on her!Sometimes love is silent gazes & patiently waiting for your loved ones. “Moonlit Reunion” is an experience that needs to be savored slowly and cherished. I went into this drama with zero expectations and came out thoroughly entertained. The reason to start this show was obviously Xu Kai, but I fell in love with it because of Tian Xi Wei. I have seen her previously in quite a few shows, but this was the first time that she made a real impression. As the half human Cat Lord, Wu Zhen, she had to portray dual roles. One was that of the infamous County Princess Qinghe. Wu Zhen is the Empress’s sister, born as the second daughter of the Duke, she has always led a carefree, unrestrained life. But in reality, she is the Cat Lord or the Second Master of the Demon Underworld. When the former Cat Lord died protecting the mortal realm from the Heavenly Fire Disaster, he meet her unexpectedly and transferred his powers to her. For eighteen years, she has masquerading as a spoiled Princess during the daytime and as a diligent Cat Lord during the nighttime. The story majorly revolves around her and rightly so!

The show which started as a sobriety camp turned into a family bonding time!Han Geum Ju is a diehard alcoholic; she would literally die if she couldn’t drink. Not just her, her father & elder sister share the family trait while her mother is hellbent on making sure they don’t drink. The first half of the show surmises on this premise; the latter half deals with Geum Ju’s deaddiction campaign, her mother’s escape from death scare and her boyfriend Dr. Seo Ui Jun’s personal struggles. There isn’t much to unpack in this show. Apart from the sobriety campaign that becomes a distinct part of this drama; much of it is spent on dealing with personal issues. Each character has their own problems to solve and the storyline deals with them one by one. The side characters add their own punch and support the main leads in their own characteristic manner!

One of my favorite action thrillers in 2025!!
A demon who is wise, diffident in his resolve and also a demon hunter, never heard before right! The only way to spoil a good ending is being dependent on AI, because that’s what’s rumored to happen to this show. It seems like IQIYI decided to take advice from AI to choose the ending for the show, which led to endless debate and speculations. As for me, I wasn’t overtly disappointed with the ending because the fact that both of them are alive means the most to me. It’s quite possible that they met again when after twelve years, the realm gate reopens. As Jiu Xuanye, Ren Jia Lun remains at the centerfold of this thriller action; first as a resilient demon hunter who follows his father’s philosophy of never hunting the innocent, even demons. The latter half portrays his identity crisis when his demonic nature is revealed and yet he chooses to follow the principles instilled in him by his adoptive father. Xuanye had a character depth, unseen before in any protagonists. His struggles don’t change his basic nature, even though he fights back, battles for survival, Xuanye remains the same. His thoughts never stray from the path choosen by his father. Song Zu Er makes his charming love interest; initially timid, she grows strong and bold. Her caricature perfectly matches Xuanye’s thoughtful candor and they make a sweet couple.

This show was a fresh breath of life, quite different from most fantasy shows that rely heavily on CGI!After watching Xiumin in “Boss-dol Mart”, I wasn’t prepared to see him in a serious role, but he stuck gold with this role. Unfortunately, lack of promotions didn’t do well for this show, because this hidden gem remains unexplored. Set in two different eras, the show explores the themes of societal discrimination and power struggles. I was instantly drawn to his battles with the baby faced antagonist, Lee Sae On. Lee Sae On has always played positive roles and his caricatures are pretty endearing. The sudden transformation into a gruesome, evil villain was uncanny that I was stuck with surprise and shock. Frankly, most of the times, I couldn’t comprehend the fact that someone who looks so cute was out killing people left and right. Despite that, I enjoyed the dynamics between the lead protagonist and the antagonist, it was entertaining to say the least!

An Entertaining Watch Indeed!!
A rebellious princess who loves writing scandalous stories about herself and her family members! The show focuses on the sort of revolutionary thoughts and beliefs that were possibly impossible in the Joseon Era. Maybe that’s why it is fiction, because the kind of revolution that Grand Princess Hwa Ri could never be comprehended in that age. This sets this storyline quite different from most Korean historicals. At heart, it might seem to revolve around the erotic novels written by Princess Hwa Ri under a different pen name; she is most certainly defiant and not at all docile like most royal ladies. Whenever a problem arises, she would rightly use her erotic novels to stir the public opinion. Of course, no one knows it is the Grand Princess’ doing; but underneath all that gleam, glam and sexual overtures, “The Scandal of Chun Hwa” seeks resolutions to problems faced by the women, some of which are transient even in today’s age and time. It could be getting her Uncle punished for murdering her aunt, or seeking vengeance on her own brother when rapes a commoner, or getting the Crown Princess divorved, Hwa Ri always manages to do the impossible. This was one of the best part of this storyline; she is relentlessly committed to making women’s lives better. A true revolutionary indeed!

An Entertaining & Thrilling Watch Indeed
This review was long overdue, I’m glad that I finally got time to watch the show completely!Forgoing on the dynasty politics, “Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II To the West” sticks close to what it is best known for- solving crimes in the midst of diffident situations. Despite their initial misunderstandings in the pilot episodes, our dynamic duo are back together as they travel towards the West with their motley group. Whilst Lu Lingfeng is demoted to the position of the Sheriff, Su Wuming tags along as his personal secretary aka sounding board. The 40 episodes span across their various adventures as Lu LingFeng & Su Wuming solve mysteries in the midst of defending themselves from varied assassinations attempts. Even though they suspect the Emperor, Lu LingFeng never gives up on his principles and chooses to strive for justice. As they cross borders to reach Yunding, their camaraderie grows stronger; with Su Wuming taking a step back and relinquishing control to Lu LingFeng, who is now adept at investigations.

The Best Sismance in a Long Time!
This was one of those dramas that I had a “Love-Hate” relationship with! The show was obviously promoted as sismance between the leading ladies and for most quarters, it is. Sparks fly when veteran divorce lawyer Jang Na Ra (Cha Eun Kyung) has to mentor rookie lawyer Nam Ji Hyun (Han Yoo Ri). First of all, their values are invariably different; while Yoo Ri is too straight laced and principled, Eun Kyung only believes in winning her cases, no matter the cost. Clashes are inevitable, but slowly down the line, both of them settle into an amicable professional relationship which helps them grow in different ways. Because of own custody battle, Eun Kyung learns the importance of family and gets to know her daughter better. Yoo Ri on the other hand learns to separate her personal and professional lives. The male leads didn’t have much to do, apart from supporting the lead ladies; at times, their presence was overshadowed by the female protagonists who had an impeccable sense of justice.

A Beautiful Romance That Traverses Time and Tide
When I watched the pilot episodes, we were led to believe something else, but the reality is all together different! So, I remember commenting that the synopsis and plotline were misleading; sadly they weren’t. Not exactly on point and yet, unhinged. Starring Kim So Hyun, Chae Jong Hyeop, Kim Da Som, Yun Ji On, “Serendipity’s Embrace” has messy love triangles, adorable friendships and a vengeful mother hellbent on destruction. The highlight of this show is obviously the somber romance which has inevitably been dragged on for a decade. While the initial episodes dwell into Kang Hu Yeong’s supposedly unrequited feelings and longing; the second half is a mature interpretation of Lee Hong Ju’s redressal. The script is carefully curated to portray their love, struggles and inner fears, as it depicts their soulful love story. The childhood romance is blissful and angsty, yet endearing. Let’s get to know them better!

One of my Best Shows in 2024, Please do Watch!!!
I loved Lim Sun more than Lee Mi Jin, irrevocably and undeniably!Frankly, I never thought that watching a middle age woman living her life to the fullest would be so much fun. Metaphorically, this story focuses on Lim Sun, Lee Mi Jin’s missing aunt but in the diabolical sense, it is Mi Jin masquerading as her aunt. How does that happen? We have a well-meaning cat to blame for it. One thing I love about the dramas in JTBC’s Saturday- Sunday slot is that the stories are always so meaningful, the casting is phenomenal, my weekends for the past few months were so heartwarming. I’m already looking forward to the next contender “Romance in the House”. Starring Jung Eun Ji, Lee Jung Eun, Choi Jin Hyuk in lead roles, “Miss Night and Day” stretches fantasy too into reality. Lee Jung Eun as Lim Sun is so inspirational and sweet, that you tend to forget about the other leads, she outshines them. That is probably the charm of this show, which portrays a 30-year-old woman trapped in a 50-year-old body. The hijinks are phenomenal, because obviously Lim Sun never acts her age; from typing sheets at a lightening speed to climbing rock mountains, she does everything perfectly and endlessly without getting tired. This was one of my favorite shows in a long, long time, so let’s debrief!
