I never watched telenovelas either but my great grandmother used to watch one Turkish telenovela and I heard that it was really popular among elders and I have accidentally seen one episode and I must say that it was really bad. But that was the worst type of soap opera with more than 100 two-hours long episodes. I'm not bashing all Turkish dramas of course...I heard some of them are good and not all of them are telenovela-like of course.

Totally agree on Ta Hwan (Empress Ki) !!! Ji Chang Wook is so talented that he makes you love even the most flawed, spoiled character! I think Wang Yoo's character looked a little uninteresting and dull compared to Ta Hwan.
I agree with you that I remember male characters after watching drama more than female characters. I think it's maybe because in most of Asian dramas we have strong/rich/cold ML and naive/poor/kind FL and that practically means nice but weak FL and strong ML who protects her. However there are some exceptions. I think that there are female characters like those you mentioned in your article that are visibly strong and remarkable but there are also other female characters that look weak on the outside but for certain drama watcher they look strong and real because they can relate to them.
