Journey to become irreplaceable
A workplace drama with a compelling female lead, a fair share of personal ambition and corporate politics with a slowburn romance.
The story itself is okay. Nothing particularly extraordinary but still a good workplace drama. The drama explores the desire of wanting to be Irreplaceable whether in one's professional or personal life.
☆The biggest highlight of this drama was undoubtedly its well written female lead Xu Chi. Coming from a financially disadvantaged background and a broken family, she strives to climb the corporate ladder with sheer determination. She is ambitious, smart and can be cold and calculative but never feels soulless or one dimensional. She has her vulnerabilities, expresses her emotions and learn from her mistakes. She is highly capable without being unrealistically perfect which makes her character feel humane and genuinely inspiring.
The drama primarily focuses on the workplace with romance taking a secondary role. The workplace storyline is fairly fast paced and for the most part well done. As for the main romance, it is a slow burn. I am not a big fan of age gap romances but I think this drama handled it quite well without making the relationship feel creepy or uncomfortable. The ML and FL share good emotional intimacy which makes their relationship enjoyable to watch.
Another aspect I appreciated was how the drama tried to explore the beauty and insecurities that comes with relationships and friendships between people from different family backgrounds, professional positions and levels of experience or capability.
The first half was executed really well. Xu Chi's entry into the workplace, the gradual development of friendships, the budding romance and the different interpersonal dynamics were all handled naturally. It gave the impression that the drama was building towards something genuinely interesting.
Solely based on how the female lead is written and for first half of the drama, I would give a rating of 8.8
☆Coming to the performances. Zhao Jinmai delivered a great performance as Xu Chi. She really carried the drama and the character suited her really well. Wei Daxun also did fine portraying a mature and warm character. A special mention to Michelle Bai as Lin Long whose performance stood out to me other than the main lead.
☆Where it fell short
Unfortunately, the second half was noticeably underwhelming
Despite containing some of the important developments or instances in the characters lives and relationships, the execution felt considerably weaker. Certain storylines were dragged out, unnecessary fillers and the drama seemed to lose focus on what initially made it engaging.
I feel like this drama could have taken either of two directions and benefited greatly from it. It could have centred around the three women exploring their individual journeys and how they balance their personal and professional lives. Alternatively, if the intention was to focus on Xu Chi and the Richard's story, the writers could have explored his character and personal journey more deeply following hers
Instead despite having only 20 episodes, the drama tried to incorporate too many things without giving most of them enough room to flourish. Rather than introducing new bonds and unnecessary romantic subplots the writers could have utilised that time to further develop the already established characters and relationships. [I think the story didn't need 3 romantic pairings and it didn't add much to the story and personally not much entertainment value. In the last quarter, we got a similar /repetitive cycle of minor fights, relationship angst and subsequent reconciliation for all three couples.]
☆The ending was a happy ending but felt disappointing. The emotional payoff off wasn't that satisfying. After everything hpnd, I wished the conclusion had felt more fulfilling.
Overall
Irreplaceable is still worth a watch if u like to see inspiring female lead and corporate politics. Xu Chi is a compelling protagonist whose journey makes the drama worthwhile. It has some genuinely lovely moments and interesting explorations of professional ambitions, friendships, relationships and personal insecurities. It had the potential to be a truly memorable workplace drama but ultimately, it didn't quite live up to its own promise.
