We actually donβt know why the name was changed, but Iβm assuming is to hide away from her mom.
That is possible/probable, but that does not really explain the story of the whole family moving overseas. Did the dad, stepmother and grandma also change their names? If so, why?
Also, how did Seon Young's family register get changed without her knowing? And why?
The only reason I can think of is to have another story line to fill out the 120 episodes. The useless brother having some sort of skill will help. Perhaps Na Young will develop irrational hatred towards him as well?
While I do not agree with Director Han's attitude and comments as portrayed, I completely agree that his position is in keeping with much of East Asian culture; loss of face is considered very bad. Yes, this is highly dramatic here, but it is grounded in reality. And, if we were honest, here in the West, it is not that different. There have many cases where high flying people have been brought down and publicly vilified.
The fact that he tells his parents that Soo Ji does not feel the same way as him, and then says "Not yet. But she soon will" tells us everything about him and his personality.
For Hyun Sung to be able to look within himself would require him to be aware of and accepting of someone else's opinion and feelings. Clearly that is beyond him.
Only watching this and am consistent because of the main leads! The sister is sick (she needs help), family are…
Hyun Sung (the boyfriend) is much worse than useless. He is an entitled, spoiled narcissist. Only that type of person would visit the parents of someone who has suffered a psychiatric breakdown and say "I plan on pushing forward with it [marriage] in any way I can."
You might be right, but I suspect that they will start getting closer in the not too distant future (as doctor/patient…
You might be correct and she is his mother. I only used the "..." because it would be an interesting twist if she was not. Perhaps I am over thinking things and only the two lead characters are not living with their respective mothers. Obviously, that would make Woo Ri and Hyun Sung half-brothers.
You might be right, but I suspect that they will start getting closer in the not too distant future (as doctor/patient…
You are very welcome. I am also enjoying people's comments and analyses. I miss things and here is a good place to find out what they are.
The general consensus is that (1) Kim Ma Ri (Hyun Sung's "step"mother) is Woo Ri's biological mother. I am not certain that this has been explored very much. (2) Oh Seon Young (Court Yard Restaurant family) is Soo Ji's biological mother. This was pretty much confirmed when both went to the same house in the demolition zone.
What we do not know is how Woo Ri ended up with the Court Yard Restaurant family. Although it does seem to be a family that has just come together, apparently with only Kang Woo Chang and Kang Jung Soon being related by blood.
This series has 120 episodes!? I gather we won't see our leads getting together any time soon. I hope I am mistaken…
You might be right, but I suspect that they will start getting closer in the not too distant future (as doctor/patient first, and then friends). However, the complicated "parentage" issues will cause problems. Neither of the leads are living with their biological mothers. When it is revealed who is whose mother, there are going to be "fireworks".
For me, the important step will be Soo Ji accepting the help of others, specifically Woo Ri. At the same time, she will realise that Hyun Sung is not actually helping; he is merely being an insensitive, entitled man, who does not have the empathy necessary to put Soo Ji ahead of himself.
Right now, I am waiting for the drama/scandal within the Han family to be revealed. We have three families and two (Jang family and Court Yard Restaurant family) have had their scandals. This is probably an unlikely scenario but I cannot help but wonder if there was something in Hyun Sung's 10 years overseas that was the real reason for him coming back, rather than the "Soo Ji is at the hospital" excuse.
Regardless, there are probably more than enough twists and turns ahead to delay the inevitable coming together of the leads.
Hyun sung called himself her boyfriend, and she accepted the term because she was vulnerable. And in her state…
I succumbed and caught up. I think that the preview is slightly misleading. I could be wrong, but I think that we will see that (preview) scene before we see what happened in the hospital room. Will it be another situation where Hyun Sung presents his "ownership" of Soo Ji as a fact that does not require her input, acceptance, or agreement.
What struck me was Soo Ji saying that she just wanted people to forget her name. Is the next series of episodes going to show us what she does to do that?
Even after 30+ eps, suji still treat wuri as colleague only. I don't any kind of romantic interest from her side.…
I am not certain that it will take 30 more episodes for the inevitable split with Hyun Sung, although I suspect that will be a "one-sided" split for quite a while. With no evidence whatsoever, I suspect that there will be some sort of drama* involving the Han family, and perhaps the hospital. This will result in Soo Ji seeing Hyun Sung in a more realistic light, growing a backbone, and telling him to stop, in no uncertain terms. And, yes, I think that Woo Ri will be in the background helping her recover and giving her the strength to say stop.
*I wonder if the tangled bloodlines will be part of this drama.
I would go a step further. He is a bad person. How can someone just waltz into a hospital room and tell the family…
I completely agree that Soo Ji is not setting any boundaries. Although, I do not think that he would have just walked away if she had said "sorry, but I no longer fee that way towards you", or something similar. His professed reason for returning to Korea was because Soo Ji was at the hospital, I cannot believe that he would shrug his shoulders and accept rejection.
Hyun Sung is a bad boyfriend. If he truly cares about her, he wouldn't alienate her from her co-workers and friends,…
I would go a step further. He is a bad person. How can someone just waltz into a hospital room and tell the family members to take a hike? Useless though he is, the brother wanted to stay, but is told to go home. Plus, I do not think that self-professed boyfriend trumps family when it comes to being a patient's guardian.
I would slightly disagree with the trust issues. He would have to respect Soo Ji in order to have trust (or lack it) in her. I have written before that I believe he views her as his personal property: He was in another country for 10 years, but comes back because she is at his parent's hospital. She has clearly been at the hospital for many years. He publicly announces he is her fiance. He is in the process of alienating her from colleagues, friends, and family. He is trying to control her life.
I am waiting for him to tell her that the best way to stop all of the problems is for her to give up being a doctor, become his (trophy) wife, stay at home and have children.
Good analysis. My only additional comments are (1) Aside from Jung Soon and Woo Chang, I do not think that there…
(2) and (3) are purely guesses, based on the usual drama story lines. :-)
So far, the Han family has been the typical "rich" family, but given Hyun Sung's lead role, I foresee a situation where the family will be front and centre in the story. Will Woo Ri be the reason for that? I do not know. But I agree with @EMaGr.
I am at episode 19 now and I am very confused. I think this is one of the KDrama I watched with a lot of complexity…
Good analysis. My only additional comments are (1) Aside from Jung Soon and Woo Chang, I do not think that there are any blood-relationships amongst the Court Yard Restaurant "Family". I could be wrong, but I think the three children (Woo Ri; Doo Ri; and A Ra) are all adoptees/foundlings. (2) I suspect that Woo Ri has a connection to the Han family. (3) There is a major (shameful) secret within the Han family.
Crazy sister went even lower than I thought, but I'm also getting tired of SJ. She needs to start taking action.…
Sadly, I think that Na Young will go even lower. I suspect that the confrontation (complete with egg throwing) with patients, shown in the preview, will be the result of something even more "outrageous".
I agree that Hyun Sung should stop focusing on Woo Ri. However, as I have written before, he believes that (1) Soo Ji is his property and (2) he is entitled to everything that he believes is his. It is clear that his subconscious attitude is "Why tell him to stay away when she is mine and I am his superior; he should just walk away?"
Despite rooting for the ML, for once I actually like how the bf told the ML to stay in his line in the nicest…
I would agree had he not spent most of the earlier episodes acting like Soo Ji was his personal object. A confident boyfriend would have thanked the concerned co-worker and then asked for help in making sure that Soo Ji was okay. To me, the statement came across as another "she is mine" statement.
Also, how did Seon Young's family register get changed without her knowing? And why?
