Haha, I agree. Though on the flip side, I'm not in agony waiting for episodes. This is the first show in a really long time that I've comfortably watched weekly. If I'm really invested, I'll just wait until all the episodes are out to watch in one go.
Did I hear the last line in Episode 6 right? Pued "gave" his woman to a powerful man for power? Did pimp out his girlfriend? That is so messed up! Tell me I'm reading this wrong...
Am I the only one who's not really feeling it?I was super impressed after episode 1 and 2 but after that it just…
You're not alone. When the story is slow or dry, it's the BL that motivates me to keep watching, and when the BL is dry the story is just interesting enough to keep going. The "just interesting enough to keep going" is the key here.
Damn these episodes short...loving the mystery, story, and plot with a sprinkle of BL here and there. It's just nice seeing one of my ships playing mature character roles. In 2021, we're also getting a more mature OffGun drama. Praying to GMMTV folks that KristSingto's mature BL drama is around the corner... though based on Krist's last few works, I wonder if he'll agree to be in another BL.
I just can't with this drama. I tried watching it twice but I can't get over the ML breaking the FL's wedding and the FL still falling for the ML. I liked the FL with the other dude, the one person in her life that was never connected to the other Oh Hae Yeong...
Tul has such expressive eyes and I’ve always thought so since Together with me. He’s so beautiful and he has…
Goodness yes! Tul is killing it with the facial expressions! I'd like to see Max be a little more expressive but maybe it's just not his character in this one. The music really helps to set the tone for his scenes.
While I was watching the last few episodes, I kept wondering why all Kdramas punish their couples for being happy. As a writer myself, I understand that if your character must face something or endure something in order for there to be a story. But unlike story writing, I get this sense in Kdramas that every time a couple gets too happy, or too romantic, they are punished for it. The level of intimacy our main couple had in episodes 1-5 was never revisited again in this drama. It's like they became happy too fast so they had to suffer for it for the rest of the drama. Even in the moments they were allowed to rekindle their romance, it was forcefully bogged down by unnecessary baggage because one or the other character was holding onto the past and not recognizing the opportunity in front of them.
Okay, I think the murderer may be Oat. I’ve seen lots of these kinds of shows before and it’s often the last…
Great theories! I don't have any guesses yet but the person who I don't think is the murder is Pued, just because of how Ep 3 opened. It seems a little too on the nose, showing him suspiciously, so soon into the drama.
Just watched Ep 3. Not much story progression but omg I'm such a fan of Max and Tul in these mature, adult character roles. So refreshing to the usual college and high school lakorns.
I'm definitely a webtoon stan. So watching this drama, I think the best way to enjoy it is to separate it from…
Okay, onto what I found insulting. The best thing about True Beauty is the main character Jugyeong. Not the hot guys or their backstory. It's literally Jugyeong with her hilarious expressions, cute makeup tutorials, amazing fashion sense, and her "I stan female friendships sister-before-misters attitude."
This drama so far has taken away a lot of what I love about Jugyeong. Jugyeong loves heavy metal and horror mangas because that's just her style. She's a fan and she's invested in her niche. She doesn't need a backstory like "I'm not like cute characters from romance novels so I'm turning to the horror genre." I don't NEED her looks to be the reason she likes horror. Why can't the girl just like what she likes? I don't like that her younger brother is the catalyst for her going to the comic book story every time and running into Suho. Our girl would go there even if you didn't ask little bro!
I'm not a fan of Jugyeong and Suho's first meeting and how the directors manipulated all the other events of the plot to get Jugyeong on the rooftop. Her middle school life was hard enough. We don't need the added dramatic bullying (pouring water in her bathroom stall, recording her while she confesses to the guy she likes and humiliating her, or dumping homemade cookies on her head) to be a catalyst for her wanting to change herself. But the directors over dramatized the bullying to get on that rooftop with Suho.
In the webtoon, Suho and Jugyeong met for the first time in the comic book store when she wasn't wearing make up. At first he was cold to her, but Jugyeong saw that he was reading a book she liked and struck up a conversation with him on horror mangas. The girl knew her stuff and wasn't afraid to tell the super hot guy "Hey, I can recommend you an even better one." Jugyeong was unapologetically herself in this first meeting, full-on no-makeup confidence, and I loved that about her. Even Suho likes her for that, before he sees the full-makeup version. In the drama, we just have a Jugyeong who's constantly "adorkably" running away with that modest, feminine K-drama female lead vibe we've seen a hundred times.
Suho figures out pretty early what Jugyeong looks like without makeup. Their friendship after that is heartwarming and fun to watch unfold. They still have their challenges what with Jugyeong insecure with her real face, but seeing Suho accept and open up to her is what makes them such a charming pair. I understand why the kdrama had to add drama with the "Wait, what secret does he know" plotline, but it defeats the whole purpose of Suho knowing both of her faces from the beginning and liking her anyway. Suho was never under any false impressions. I'm sure in the drama he'll figure it out soon, but in the meantime, these two have so much screen time and development with Suho under a false impression. I understand why the show writers are doing this, but I'm not a fan of how many breadcrumbs they're dropping to lead up to Jugyeong's Big Face Reveal!
Ugh, so many mixed feelings. I don't hate this drama by any means, but it would be so much easier to enjoy if I hadn't read the webtoon. Considering how amazing and faithful the Cheese in the Trap drama was to the comic, I'm surprised how many liberties they're taking with True Beauty.
I'm definitely a webtoon stan. So watching this drama, I think the best way to enjoy it is to separate it from the webtoon. There are some changes I like and some changes that are fundamentally insulting (will post those with a spoiler tag).
The changes I do like are everything to do with Su Jin's character (what a surprise, go female friendships!); Seo Jun's motorbike entrance & his corny sense of humor; Su Ha's bubbly personality and cute relationship with her boyfriend; and including Jug Yeong's dad, who's not around whatsoever in the webtoon. The music and all the settings are gorgeous too. I love the comic book store!
I have mixed feelings about this drama. The first half was hysterical, the premise was unique, the interactions heartwarming, and I discovered I love reverse cross-dressing. But the second half reminded me of any other period drama. I wish this drama avoided the politics/monarchy storyline and just focused on the widow village and on women protecting other women. It's Nokdu's character really that carries you all the way to the end. He's unique and innocent and although he has moments of weakness, he never loses the best parts of himself.
Also, Kim So Hyun, girl you are so ready to carry mature romance roles. Loved you for this role!
I'm only two episodes in so far, but did anyone else feel like they should have shuffled around the actors? I think Jamie would have made a better Tida, Jan a better Mean/Mild, and Namtarn a better Kat. I also think Krist would have made a better Gun, and Kay a better Natee. Then the second lead should get the girl. Also, GMMTV none of your actors in this cast can pass for high school students, with the exception of Jan & Kay. Even actors playing side characters like Sing and Nammon aren't convincing as high schoolers.
If you are not a fan of Lord of the Flies type storylines, this drama is not for you. This drama somehow turned out to be a cup of all my least favorite genres. I was hoping that surviving the Tsunami would be a bigger part of this drama but aside from driving the circumstances to get these kids isolated on an island together, the tsunami part is irrelevant. Just not my cup of tea. I just can't with lord of the flies type stories.
HECK YEAH! I am so late to the game but I am so damn happy that Cha Eun Woo got cast as Suho. Last time I followed up on any news about True Beauty, it was still speculation whether or not he would get the role. He was the fan favorite for it. I'm so frikken happy it worked out! I have no complaints about the girl cast for Jugyeong, and I'm pumped to see the guy cast as Seo Jun. Seo Jun's actor perfectly matches the Webtoon art :)
