I’m in Scotland. I’m a 42yo wife and mum and love kpop/kdramas/cdramas/jdramas/all Asian BL and I get teased by my husband and own kids. The line ‘they all look the same’ is thrown at me. If anyone outside heard this, they’d say oh my god, they’re racist. BUT, my husband says this because he knows he’ll get a rise out of me. He says it because we grew up in the 90s, when this was genuinely an ‘accepted fact’ about Asians. He’s not racist. He’s making a joke using a throwback to our youth, where this kind of casual racism wasn’t even thought to be that offensive (to us). As we’ve grown, society has changed a lot. Our kids, for example, are not just taught at home not to racist, sexist or -phobic. They’re taught this in schools. My husband and I love to say some racist/sexist/homophobic jokes in front of our kids to see how utterly shocked and disappointed they are. It makes me proud of them. It took a while, but they understand now that what we say as a joke is just a joke. Dark humour is fine, but you need to know your audience in case they take offence or think you’re actually racist.

I don’t think his comment was too bad. Caricatures are funny because they are supposed to be exaggerated. If I were shown a picture of a white fat guy and asked where do you think he’s from, I’d say ‘he’s AMERICAN’. He could clearly be a white guy who lives down my street (in Scotland).

SE Asians I can honestly say I can’t quite tell them apart easily (apart from Filipino/a, since my dad married a Filipina and lived there I can normally ‘sense’ a Filipino/a quite easily) and probably Thai. Of course when they speak, that’s different. I can totally tell then.

But even in China, it’s so big and from north, south, east and west, there are big differences. Some parts they are lighter skinned and others darker skinned. Even eyeslids are different.

Anyway, sorry for blabbing on. My meds just kicked in and I had something to say.

Ps I’m autistic and have adhd, so if I have offended anyone, please believe it was not intentional and would prefer feedback on that rather than just saying ‘umm ok, so you’re racist’. If I say something wrong, I can only reevaluate it if I’m told why. I’d hate to go out into the world and say/do something that would upset someone because I didn’t know.

A front facing business at that, which needs social skills. Social skills even his LITTLE brother doubts he has since he babies him all the time.

And how are these students living in huuuuuge houses with pools, yet have no obvious source of income?? None of them work. Ok, Toh has now opened a cafe, but for the full 3 months we’ve been shown up until the opening, none of them were shown to have part-time jobs.

Toh is incredibly immature and… I’m not going to say ‘Naïve’, because to be naive, you have to be unaware and he knew after hearing the phone call why jimmy was with him. He’s stupid. He deserves to be hurt if he willingly stayed in that situation. ‘Ooooh I can make him love me’. Puh-leeez. You’ve known him 5 minutes. Can’t even fully blame jimmy because Toh knew. Jimmy’s an ass, but Toh CHOSE that ass, knowing full well the ‘nice jimmy’ was just an act.

Again, urgh. Two unlikeable characters, but a least jimmy is interesting.

I’d much prefer to focus on that BEAUTIFUL CREATURE Fah 😍. #TeamTehFah pleeeease give me more of them.
