For me it was a happy ending, Li Zan and Song Ran get married and live the rest of their lives together. How long this "remaining life" is is not shown. In the novel it was 10 years.

Great ending, of course not as good as in the novel but since we're talking about a C-drama with all the censorship, not everything could be implemented.
And kudos for the last two episodes and the hospital scene, absolutely stunning.

It's been a long time since I've been in such a big hole after the end of a drama, it's going to take a while to get over it.

yeah, I also find the whole separation thing annoying, although in the novel it was a little different. To be honest, I don't know 100% how they got back together (it was a long time ago when I read the novel). They both see each other again in East Country. one or both get hurt, both worry about each other. After a soldier's wedding, the two go for a walk, talk and cry, saying how much they missed each other, blah blah and yeah. Sounds negative the way I wrote it but I liked it. I didn't write that they weren't breaking up. I just quoted one of my favorite passages from the novel. It's clear to me that it looks 100% like a real separation, but if they both say it's not then it's strange and not believable but we have to accept it
