No offense but I don't know man, I live in Japan and constantly try to watch Japanese dramas but they all…
I'm with you. I don't agree with low-budget but I don't see or feel any depth. For so many Japanese dramas it feels like they took Korean dramas, toned down emotional stuff, removed the already extremely limited PDA and then cut the amount of screentime for the series in half.
I do try to give them a chance but so many of them just aren't that good. This goes beyond romantic comedies and is a general statement on Japanese TV. I don't watch anime so I can't comment on any of that - I'm talking exclusively live action.
Obviously a lot of people here do like it so it's just my opinion. I just don't see what makes these shows compelling. The first one on the list - I agree it was pretty good but I think that's mainly because of the lead actress. I take my Japanese dramas in pretty small doses and very slowly.
The trailer looked funny - just stumbled across it after watching a documentary. I'll check it out. Part of me wishes this was a full series (16-24 episodes an hour long each) but another part of me realizes the writers might not have the content for something that long so hopefully it will be better this way.
Princess Agents and Fighter of Destiny are my two favorites of those pictures. For posters/covers I think a bad one can make me avoid a show but that's it.
Viki has licensed it!

Those numbers sound pretty unbelievable. Netflix probably has around ~100 million subscribers. Viki and Dramafever deliver niche content. I guess I just doubt Viki is much bigger than Dramafever and I also doubt either one is as high as listed.
Maybe you mean unique monthly viewers? Or active monthly users? Even then that sounds pretty high.
dropped it because of it's ending, incest no thank you
I guess it depends on how you define sad. If you want "and then they lived happily ever after and had a bunch of kids" the answer is no. But it's not tragic. It's not like one of them dies in a war and the other dies of loneliness.
The theme is 'serving' the country/people vs. their love and from my description I think you can guess which one wins.
I really liked Lee Yu Bi in Innocent Man. Park Bo Young is probably my favorite on the list though. She's so small but she made me believe she was the bully in Hot Young Bloods.
The summary is long but to shorten it - the lead is a 'lost' prince who is brought in to palace life with the expectation by those who found him that he will train and become the crown prince/heir.
The similarity is mainly in that both leads (Yoon Eun Hye and Se7en) grew up 'normally' and have to adjust to palace life. Conflicts between old life and new life arise.
But you do not need to watch Goong to watch Goong S. They have similar themes in them but they are not directly related.
The interesting thing about this is there wasn't anything really groundbreaking about it but somehow I enjoyed it a lot. Many other shows I've gone "oh typical" or gotten frustrated and stopped watching but this show had charm - even with some ridiculous characters, unbelievable drama and cheesiness.
I don't know why this show works and why I enjoyed it so much but I did really enjoy it.
OMG THIS IS AMAZING i GET that Chaiyan at first i was annoyed by his actions then i understood him and actually…
Yeah the sound of it in the comments ("rape") had me dreading it but I think it was done about as well as it could have been done.
They both have feelings for each other but Jee is less conflicted about them for obvious reasons. There was no physical force, Satit tried to back out of it.
This wasn't a romantic night. It was an emotional (and physical) release for the two characters but with some obvious regrets afterwards.
This drama is fun.. but gosh chaiyan needs to stay away from Jee!!! isn''t that common sense??!!!
I don't really like either one. He obviously has no idea how to set boundaries or put his wife first when the decision should be easy (he hangs out with Jee instead). Piak obviously has control issues but the fact she almost always seemed to be second to him hanging out and talking with the lead actress - even from the start of the show - is a bad sign.
The drama will likely keep them together but I think they should just break up and both mature as people before they go around causing people even more pain. I have little sympathy or time for either one.
The main couple is the only reason to watch this for me at least. I guess there's some nice emotional relief with Daraka and deep-voiced baby-faced guy (I forgot his name, it's late).
It's a tough one. I feel like Hwarang and Moorim School in particular straddle that fine line and are close to being "idol dramas" (in a bad sense - the drama isn't good and looks like it was made because they could get a bunch of idols). I'm not saying either one is a bad show but they both felt pretty weak to me in terms of writing/direction.
A problem I have whenever these singers get cast in shows (not so much movies) is an overwhelming majority of the comments and ratings get really polarized. Fanbases mobilize and they hate on particular characters just to support the character their idol is playing.
It's unfortunate and I'd like to think it doesn't influence how I view stuff like Hwarang and Moorim School - but I'm guessing it does have some influence.
I wonder if any new information has been released. I remember a month or two ago there was a press release at an event involving DramaFever (and others) about the expanding and growing popularity of Asian/international TV content in America. I believe the press release also said DramaFever had the license to season 2 and they were expecting it in the spring/summer(?) But I forget where I read that and now I'm worried I'm remembering things wrong.
I liked it. I liked Xiao Xiao and Si Niang. The main "couple" was a bit nauseating but the other 2 women were fine (even though Si Niang was a bit obsessive over her love).

If it was another actress and not her - I'm not sure how well it would have worked. She deserves praise for her portrayal.

It's a standalone show with a similar theme.
