Celebrity The MUSIC is the infusion of the story and characters
First off, they really did a fantastic job interpreting the novel into a script. It stays true to the novel with plot points storyboarding but it simplifies and weeds out the excess while still creating these so Ing and so Yok responses and moments. I'm loving this drama adaptation - phenomenal. Love. In fact, I'm loving this drama because it does so well with its script adaptation. Award for best adapted novel to drama hands down.
BUT CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE MUSIC?! IS ANYBODY ELSE BLOWN AWAY?!?!?!
The Music is my main focus of conversation with this review. I am blown away. The opening theme song PRETTY is unique and fresh. It's brilliant. It is revolutionary and is setting a trend and leading it. The song immediately tells us who Yok and Ing are and the story between them. It's explosive and electric with potential. When the next opening song LOVE ME is played it totally pierces our hearts as it so perfectly meets the emotional mood that our characters are moving through. It is the feelings Ing and Yok become swallowed by - that sick feeling of love and pain that overwhelms.
Shin Li's songs are a mix of English and Chinese lyrics with a sound that is something like French Noir meets New Wave. It instantly makes the drama feel young, relevant and edgy. Simultaneously emitting a refined and crystal-clear image of the drama and characters.
The way we perceive the opening theme song and vibrate with it can set the viewers heart position to the drama, to the characters. And a good opening can carry those perceptions and vibrations through the entire drama in each episode and in the characters themselves. A bad or OK opening is just the 2 minute song that plays at the beginning and feels isolated, separate or irrelevant from the drama and characters.
This opening song holds the image or the personality of our two main leads. Ing, who is doubtless about his value, confident, gliding through every moment and owning it, never backs down. And Yok, who is composed, confident, immovable, a quiet storm rising up in the midst of becoming a man and knowing who he is.
The music is applied well not just with the theme song. Even the original score is already dong a fantastic job of moving the story from our first introductions of Ing in the city and Yok in the ring. Throughout the episodes the original score does a fantastic job of telling us what the feeling is, what vibe is.
The song that plays when Ing first meets Yok creates that instant bloom of unexplainable and unpreventable attraction. We feel how Ing is feeling through this song. The song is fresh and cracks opening within us like a can of soda. And just as the feeling starts to take off it fades like a the sound of a door shutting by Yoks shoulder or rather disfavor. Later, the song that plays when Ing and Yok are stuck in the storm perfectly vibrates the comfort and love they find in each other's arms. There are so many perfect moments in which the songs chosen for particular moments are just so on point and it's hook line and sinker for our hearts.
Music side of production did *clap* their *clap* job *clap*. They showed up for this one! Let's go!!
