Well, i think a soldier can mean many things. For example, Xiao Jue thought her stature was more fitting for a scout than probably a front line soldier, but a scout in the army could still be considered a soldier. I’m just saying Xiao Jue noted she was not as buffed as her comrades. I loved Bree in GoT and she was indeed a formidable soldier. I see He Yan though, as more like Arya Stark. Short, slim, but deadly. I think because of He Yan’s frame and lack of “buffness”, she needs to rely more on agility, dexterity, and speed, like Arya. That said, i don’t think there’s a right or wrong in all of this. Everyone has their ideal version of He Yan based on the novel and I think that version would be hard to fill when you consider the audience, the actresses available or interested, the director, producer, and everyone else who gets a say on who should play the role. And TBH, I really liked the novel, but as I read it, I thought all this is just super unrealistic…but I enjoyed it because I like dreaming of what ifs and being immersed in a different world. For me the drama is the same, I’m just along for the ride and enjoying myself. And all is fair for those who don’t or can’t enjoy it. It is what it is and "Vive la différence"!

I think she’s only like that when they are alone. With the other recruits she seems respectful. Also, it seems like he softened up to her once he realized that she is a woman and not a man. That probably increased his respect for her given she’s a standout talent and a woman, at that!

This is hard to do in a drama and still have the FL be appealing to viewers. I think the closest, I’ve seen, where it was done well was He Lan Dou in A Journey to Love, but she did not have to be a martial artist. Another good one is Ni Ni in The Rise of Phoenixes, but she’s also very pretty and very thin. At least Zhou Ye in the military scenes is not overly laden with makeup and most young boys before puberty are skinny and feminine. Think of the choir boys with high-pitched, beautiful voices.

Is that her protecting Chu Zhao? I hope Xiao Jue is watching lol 🤭

Yes, IIRC in the novel the other men thought she was a boy that had “male” problems…i took this as testosterone issues, like not being able to grow facial hair, etc.

Agree. After a while, I became annoyed that the FL was always playing “hard-to-get” even though they were clearly in a relationship. I kept thinking, does she really like him? It seemed like she did, but her actions were in contrast to what she felt or what we were made to believe. It could have been how the script was written, but it just seemed so contrary to reality that I couldn’t get myself to finish the drama, no matter how much I liked the actors/actresses.

Me too! I like strong, smart, independent FLs, but it’s just not realistic when they are perfect.

I felt the chemistry between the main couple, however, i too also felt Dou Zhao was too perfect and can do no wrong. I like FLs where there is inner struggle to do what’s right and that they sometimes make mistakes, cuz no one is perfect in real life, but that’s just me…
