One of the the most baffling things was the ending of some characters as if the writers didn't know their own creations and characterizations hence wrote the wrong reactions for them.
Another thing was, GPY wasn't really a Magnate or at least we didn't get to see his magnate days. He was a sharp and sly businessman but as it's been previously said here he was portrayed as a Jack of all trades. At first I thought he's going to add to his ventures but it didn't happened. He just jumped from one branch to another as some bird and only left a name and found some influential friends to come to his aid later. Like an artist who'd had a masterpiece in film, drama, theatre and music and 50 yrs later no one has heard of them beside their singular successes in different arts.
The last arc was dragged and combined with the lukewarm revelation of LWT's identity it was an underwhelming let down.
Many good characters were either underused or misused like Ms. Su who had reduced to a fairy godmother that changed her appearance everytime, appeared in time of need and disappeared after.

I always thought Opium wars happened in 1890s or around that time but after this I finally understood they were much earlier, I have this drama to thank for correcting my misinformation. On the other hand, it's scary to think how much people in those areas had suffered, being bombed by the foreigners and being killed by the rebels.
They should've named the episodes instead of just 1,2,3... GPY vs. the Banks, GPY and the Pawnshop business, GPY and the 8 Families, GPY and The Rebels, GPY and gun deal, GPY and Tea, GPY, the Dowager Queen and other Royal intrigues, GPY and the Foreigners, GPY and rebuilding a city, etc. Then we could keep track of his businesses.
It may be just phrasing. Context is very important with certain chinese words. "Uncle/Aunt" can be used…
I know that, we use it too but not for intimate relationships. I was confused why he calle his older lover uncle instead of something like Gege or else.
