Slow-burn political drama with a rushed ending.
The Princess’s Gambit starts strong with striking visuals, elegant costumes and a slow-burn political plot that immerses me in a world of quiet strategy and emotional restraint.
Liu Xueyi delivers a performance full of depth and charm while Meng Ziyi’s female lead is portrayed as intelligent and composed rather than overly emotional which I appreciated.
The palace intrigue is handled thoughtfully in the early episodes with tension building through strategic dialogue and power dynamics instead of constant action.
It definitely feels like a drama that respects its audience’s intelligence, creating an immersive and emotionally engaging atmosphere.
However, the drama begins to lose momentum midway.
Some subplots feel underdeveloped and the romance lacks the chemistry needed to make key scenes truly impactful.
Although the aesthetics remain appealing, the close-up-heavy directing and stiff camera work in later episodes make the visuals feel flat after a while.
Unfortunately, the ending feels rushed and leaves several character arcs unresolved, which is disappointing after so much careful buildup.
It’s a decent watch if you enjoy strategic storytelling and slow emotional burns.
