In the novel ML did become a mortal and so FL went to him and took him under her wing. She tries teaching him how to become immortal (this way they can be together forever again) but ML doesn’t want to. It's cuz ML wants to live as himself cuz he's his own person. ML who’s a mortal doesn’t remember her but he loves her. Somthin happens which results in FL's death. FL goes back to her immortal body so she's ok. Then ML comes back years later to her as an immortal and remembers her 100%. Basically, he cultivated to become immortal so that he could meet her and be with her again. Then the bonus end is where they get married
