When are they able to cut themselves from their past relationships??
The short answer is - although FL broke up with SML in the middle and ML doesn't care about his ex-wife, both exes continue to pursue them no matter what.
SML uses FL's friends and family against her (her father wants to sell her for the highest price). In the end, ML just fights with the SML, and it turns out that for a long time it was only a matter of SML’s obsession. It's ep.23 (Literally their dialogue: ML: Do you think she will make up with you if I give up her? SML: Who said I am going to make up with her? I've told you a long time ago that my goal is you.)
ML doesn't care about his ex-wife, but he sympathizes with her kid because of his own mommy-issue (she abandon him). His ex-wife knows it and tries to manipulate him (after all, she is a single mother in China), but gives up. The development of its plot takes about 4 eps and ends in ep. 22. She doesn't have much screen time, she's just a catalyst for ML's psychological problems, which they work out together with FL
This is a warm story with complex characters. No one here is perfect (except for the FL's granny:), and all main characters have the burden of family, relationships and their own issues. But the main couple changes throughout the show (especially ML, from restrained interest to pure cuteness), and everyone gets a satisfying ending - while the audience gets a ton of sweetness :) The whole drama focuses on relationships in many different variations; eventually you'll get a point of view on all of them. Some are very annoying (you know, that "marriage is a family matter, not a personal"-thing), some are very inspiring (without trust there will be no strong relationships) The only villain in the story is the FL's father, he's awful and (unfortunately) realistic
'The confession' will be in ep. 13, then they will have some troubles in 22-23 ep. (partly because of ML’s fear of being abandoned), and then there will be all cuteness and sweetness <3 You can easily skip other relationships (won't affect the main couple). It’s just the screenwriter was interested in writing and talking about a variety of types of relationships, and each one was discussed in great detail from all sides.
