Criminally Underrated
I don’t care what anyone says, this drama is an absolute gem. The humour is on point, it makes jokes about how incredibly clueless the main characters are at times and it still manages to punch you in the gut with emotions in the end. Is the cinematography as good a in other dramas? No, not even close. Is the acting out of this world? No. Is it still my new favorite? Yes, because it has so much heart and I would do anything to see these characters happy. The main critique I see for this drama is miscommunication and people saying that Bawoo should learn to speak up and I have to disagree, because at the end of the day we have two queer characters who have to actually be scared about speaking up and the repercussions of their feelings, because sadly that’s just the world we live in. Adding to this the fact that at the beginning of the drama both Bawoo and Jihoon did bravely speak up about their feelings but both thought the other person wasn’t serious, because they had to play it down/deny it in front of their friends. I myself would be scared to ever speak up again after that, considering the panic attack I had for speaking up about my feelings before and it’s not the same for straight people, who „only“ ever have to worry about getting their hearts broken. I thought this drama perfectly incapsulated the feeling of being human and queer and that’s all it was ever supposed to do. Is it realistic? No, but the themes and undertones are. Don‘t watch it if you don’t want to go along with the hardships of life and the pain of being queer and in love, even if they are secondary in this drama, they still are part of it. The miscommunication in this drama is all self-preservation based, and I would never blame a queer character or person for trying to keep themselves and their heart safe, especially if they were already burned before. You don’t have to like this drama (I myself only have it in my favorites, because it felt like home, not because of the actual quality of the drama), but please try to relate to these characters and the positions they are in.
