Cute drama for the feels
I loved this drama, though it is not in my favorites because it's more a drama for if you want to watch something funny and carefree. I loved that they deviated from the clichee of separating the main couple and making them break up, I often find that trope boring and unnecessary, so I was happy that this couple finally stood up for themselves. I loved the second lead couple as well, though I have to say that the only thing that really, really, really bothers me about this show is that they had him sleep with her for the first time when she was blackout drunk. I hated that they tried to turn it into something romantic. Everything else was really cute though. Was this review helpful to you?

This series was everything I needed this year
I‘ve rewatched Not Me a couple of times now and I never get over the fact how good it is. Last year and this year I‘ve struggled quite a lot with depression and thus threw myself into watching shows, just to keep me distracted. Not Me kept me distracted while at the same time imprinting itself in my memory forever. And eventhough I‘ve watched MANY series this year, Not Me is still one of my favorites. Why? Because it managed to capture the heartfelt struggle of minorities in society that isn’t build to support the poor and needing. The series addresses many important issues, such as monopolies, gender identity, sexuality, disabilities, and more. All while wrapped into a storyline that has you captured until the last moments. Of course there are always things one can criticize, for example at times the quality of the production lacks, but taking into consideration, that Not Me was provided an incredibly low budget by GMMTV, it did really, really well. I tend to be really generous when rating things I‘ve watched as to not disregard the work and struggle that came with creating it. But Not Me never deserved anything less than my full attention. Even if the storyline isn’t something that would normally interest you, the social criticism portrayed openly and even the one only portrayed in undertones, is worth every second of the time spend watching it.Was this review helpful to you?

Criminally Underrated
I don’t care what anyone says, this drama is an absolute gem. The humour is on point, it makes jokes about how incredibly clueless the main characters are at times and it still manages to punch you in the gut with emotions in the end. Is the cinematography as good a in other dramas? No, not even close. Is the acting out of this world? No. Is it still my new favorite? Yes, because it has so much heart and I would do anything to see these characters happy. The main critique I see for this drama is miscommunication and people saying that Bawoo should learn to speak up and I have to disagree, because at the end of the day we have two queer characters who have to actually be scared about speaking up and the repercussions of their feelings, because sadly that’s just the world we live in. Adding to this the fact that at the beginning of the drama both Bawoo and Jihoon did bravely speak up about their feelings but both thought the other person wasn’t serious, because they had to play it down/deny it in front of their friends. I myself would be scared to ever speak up again after that, considering the panic attack I had for speaking up about my feelings before and it’s not the same for straight people, who „only“ ever have to worry about getting their hearts broken. I thought this drama perfectly incapsulated the feeling of being human and queer and that’s all it was ever supposed to do. Is it realistic? No, but the themes and undertones are. Don‘t watch it if you don’t want to go along with the hardships of life and the pain of being queer and in love, even if they are secondary in this drama, they still are part of it. The miscommunication in this drama is all self-preservation based, and I would never blame a queer character or person for trying to keep themselves and their heart safe, especially if they were already burned before. You don’t have to like this drama (I myself only have it in my favorites, because it felt like home, not because of the actual quality of the drama), but please try to relate to these characters and the positions they are in.Was this review helpful to you?

So much potential wasted
I was really enjoying this show so far, but the way episode 2 handled domestic abuse was just absolutely horrendous, I will not be watching the rest of the show. There is no „oooh I‘m sorry I beat you before, now that you sacred me half to death I will be a better man“, just no. We don’t go around victim blaming and having the VICTIM say sorry to the abusive husband, especially after everyone throughout the whole episode kept saying the victim should handle her issues herself!!! I don’t care if she was possessed and wanted to hurt him, she should never ever be made to apologise to him. And Khem had this whole speech earlier in the episode about domestic abuse, just to throw it out the window later on. He went from „You need to do something about domestic abuse“ to „oooh look they REKINDLED their love“ real fast. There is no rekindling love in an abusive household, the best thing you can do is escape. I know Khem is supposed to be this innocent cutie who believes in the good of people, but an abusive marriage is the wrong place to make that point. You already established that side of him by having him be a complete fool for the whole of the first episode, you don’t need to make that point again, especially not at the cost of dragging women who experienced domestic abuse through the dirt. The show had a really good storyline established, but wasted it by making a point of women in abusive marriages having to ‚work‘ to establish a ‚stable‘, ‚loving‘ home. There were NO repercussions for the husband, none at all, he should be behind bars or at least never be allowed to step near her again, but instead the show decided to make a point of ‚relationships are hard‘ and ‚both parties need to work on it‘. I am in no way blaming the actors, this isn’t their fault, but I am blaming the creators. The show probably went trough many stages of reviewing before release and I can’t get my head around how no one stopped for a minute and went like „hmm maybe they way we addressed the topic wasn’t the best“. I would have loved to continue this show for the plot, but I will not be supporting this kind messaging and will not continue watching it.Was this review helpful to you?
