Father Cheng went to escort money that was being transported and was accused of stealing them and defecting. So the Cheng family is brought to prison for interrogation. Since SS is going to marry LBY the emperor spared her from this punishment, but SS wants to stand together with her family. Her mother does not want her to join them in jail so she slaps SS and tells her that no matter what happens she must live on or else she and her father won't forgive her.

In one way the Crown Prince would have been good yes because he is kind and benevolent, but that would probably have worked better in a empire that had been established for more then just 10 years and was therefor more secure.
