Xuanzhu is complicated since the story focuses on him a lot on his power struggle and ambition. One can't help but feel bad for him. Xuanzhu technically doesn't have romance scenes with her at the start since he doesn't show that he likes her and even encourages her to marry the "4th ml" but there are some hints in the novel which shows him being jealous for example he felt sad or angry when she gave him something that was made by jing. Twoards the middle he slowly realizes his feelings and tries to do anything to make her stay with him. His attempt to kill jing is probably what ruined all his chances. All xiayao wanted was to spend the rest of her life with her man peacefully who was willing to never leave her and xuanzhu could have done that but his ambition got the best of him.

That drama left me scarred for ages. Especially the ml he traumatized me 💀
