I ended up dropping this drama at episode 18, which was a little sad because I genuinely enjoy mystery and investigation dramas.
Was it amazing? Nope. Was it bad? Also nope. 😂 From what I watched, it was an okay drama with some good moments, but the mystery-solving wasn’t particularly interesting to me. Di Ren Jie also seemed to be doing most of the work himself, while his two sidekicks were mostly just there for the ride. Honestly, Hong Liang, his caretaker, was the only one who consistently felt useful.
As for Ma Rong, her exaggerated and over-the-top characterization made her more frustrating than likable. Overall, there were just too many things that kept me from wanting to continue.
Compared to this, the Di Ren Jie adaptation Tang Mist is much better, in my opinion. It has a stronger story, even if the character development is relatively light.
This might be the fastest drama I’ve ever finished, especially since I skipped the opening and ending credits. Some episodes are only 15 minutes, 12 minutes, or even less than 10 minutes... 🤣
But honestly, I’m not really sure how to feel about this one. The whole mystery felt pretty generic, and there was only one main case from beginning to end. Which... considering the title is Secrets of the Haunted Manor.
I would’ve enjoyed it more if there had been a few standalone cases, more variety in the plot, and maybe some twists that actually caught me off guard. The characters also felt underdeveloped, and I didn’t feel like they had much depth or anything that really made them stand out.
Instead, I mostly kept watching because the episodes were so short that I figured, “Well, I might as well finish it.” It was easy enough to get through, but I don’t think it left much of an impression on me.
It’s just average for me. I was expecting more horror, but the more the story unfolded, the more it became a conspiracy mystery. The acting was pretty below average too. Nothing really felt that natural or convincing, and some of the performances felt really forced. At times it had this kinda amateurish, over-the-top drama vibe that made it hard for me to fully get into it.
The title caught my attention while I was going through the recommendations, mainly because of the Song Ci character. Having watched the TVB drama Witness to a Prosecution (1999), I was curious whether this would be a different take on his story — maybe showing a younger Song Ci learning forensic skills from a master at an early age, compared with the TVB version where he develops his skills and gains recognition much later in life.
But after watching it, I realised it actually takes quite a different direction. This version has a much stronger youth theme, with a greater focus on a group of young characters, while the story also spends quite a bit of time on their friendships, relationships and adventures. I guess I was expecting something closer to the forensic journey and case-solving focus of the TVB version, so the direction of this drama caught me a little off guard. 😂
One thing I did really like about this, though, is Song Ci himself. When it comes to solving cases, he has a much more professional and serious attitude, which I really enjoyed seeing. At the same time, he can be quite goofy and playful when he’s not investigating, so I liked that contrast in his character. He can switch between being focused and competent when the case calls for it and being much more carefree in other situations.
Even though it wasn’t quite what I expected, it’s still an enjoyable show in its own way. It just has a much more youthful and lighthearted feel, so I can see it having a lot of appeal for viewers who enjoy that kind of coming-of-age, friendship and adventure vibe.
Unfortunately, I ended up dropping it at episode 7. I think it simply wasn’t quite the kind of Song Ci story I was looking for. I was hoping for more emphasis on the forensic and investigative side of his story, so I found myself struggling to stay invested once I realised that the drama was going in a different direction.
It’s definitely not that I thought the drama was bad — I think it just comes down to personal preference. If you enjoy youth-oriented stories with friendship, relationships and adventure alongside the mystery and investigation, this could be right up your alley.

Personally, I’m still team live-action 😂 I don’t have anything against AI dramas, but I really hope short dramas continue to give real actors opportunities too. For some actors, these could be a source of side income or even a stepping stone toward their careers.
And honestly, I just prefer watching real people act. There’s something about the facial expressions, emotions and chemistry that makes the story feel more real to me. AI can definitely have its place, but I hope it won’t completely replace real actors.
I really appreciated how much depth there was to the story, especially with the slow-burn strategy, revenge, power struggles, and character development. From the first episode, I got the impression that the rebirth aspect would be more about the leads trying to change their fate through political schemes, revenge, and all the power struggles. So I went into this expecting the drama to focus more on that, and I was honestly surprised that almost half of it ended up revolving around marriage schemes and toxic family dynamics.
I’ll be honest, I really struggled with that part because the marriage schemes just kept coming back again and again. 😭 And while the leads’ relationship was developing at such a painfully slow pace, I was constantly waiting for them to finally get closer, especially when they already had so little screen time together. 😂
But even then, I never really found myself fully invested. I enjoyed certain parts and appreciated what the drama was trying to do, but there was still something missing for me. After episode 13, I finally had to drop this drama AGAIN because, honestly, my patience has officially run out. 😭 At least now I have a better idea of what this story is actually about, rather than constantly playing the guessing game and wondering whether I really want to keep watching.
