The romance IS between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. In the book, Mo Ran is affected by certain spells which causes him to misinterpret his feelings fro Chu Wanning as hate and his feelings for Shi Mei as love. In the beginning of the book, we see Mo Ran HATING Chu Wanning and wanting to kill him but later on, he realises that Chu Wanning is probably the only person (with a few other exceptions) who cares enough about Mo Ran to save him with his life on the line.
If you have the time, pls do read the novel. It's a masterpiece filled with fluff, romance, a LOT of angst, and suspense.

But despite that, as I said somewhere below, they did an AMAZING job with the costumes and sets and scenery! The Untamed was a total eye-catcher!
Honestly, I'm scared of watching Wuxia lol. CGI effects can easily turn me off, but I'm still curious about it…

The Untamed is a very low budget drama, but as you can see, even the low production didn't stop it from earning the high rating haha. Just try investing your emotions into understanding each character and their emotions and ur good to go :)
