they wanted to highlight the losses people felt during that gwangju uprising .. and they did what they did to showcase the hurt and the loss of those people who lost their loved ones suddenly and unnecessarily during that period of time .. it wasn't just about the romance ... i honestly wouldn't have related to the drama if no main character died.. i didn't like it either but it made their point come across. cause if other support characters die or none die we wouldn't realized how much of a tragedy it was
