I imagine it is a number of factors. Yes, she is mean and testing FL many times but I can see where she is coming from. I imagine she has come across a number of gold diggers in her life and would be naturally cautious. Even her comments about food and strangers made me think about palace dramas and poisoning. So yes, she is mean but not as bad as When the phone rings FL mother.
