Actually in the novel, North wants to quit the pub as he feels uncomfortable but the worker there called North on the phone would really beg North to come back to work even though he wants to quit. The other worker doesn’t know what happened and would insist on North not quitting. North would complain about this to Johan who buys the pub and then fires him.

In the novel, HHJ meets with an accident as a child along with her step father’s son and daughter. The son dies and the step-sister loses her hearing (I think… she gets hurt but I forgot how exactly). HHJ is the only one who escaped unscathed. Her mom fears being abandoned by the wealthy husband in anger and hence asks HHJ to pretend as a mute so that it’ll be like she too suffered losses.
