A Flawed Fox Demon Story Worth Discovering

This is a strange drama, and it certainly has its share of plot holes and underdeveloped storylines. Despite those flaws, I still enjoyed it. For me, it's something of a hidden gem—a low-budget production whose shortcomings are easy to overlook because of its unique premise and the presence of a fox demon lead. The short runtime made it easy to push past some of the execution issues, while the themes and subplots were intriguing enough to keep me invested in where the story was headed. I would have loved to see a second season to explore some of the unanswered questions and unresolved threads, as those mysteries were among the aspects that interested me most.

A Funny and Thoughtful Look at Women's Lives

I mainly watched this for the comedy. It was dynamic, weaving in power struggles involving social class and gender, sibling rivalry, and sharp social commentary on institutional gender bias. But what I loved most were the hilarious situations, the witty banter between characters, and the well-crafted dialogue that really delivered the humor.

Personally, I’m not a fan of family dramas—and this borders on one—but with its slice-of-life tone layered over a palace setting and strong social commentary on the treatment of women, it was easy to forget the family-driven aspect. I genuinely enjoyed it.

Tea, Tenacity, and Triumph

If you're looking for a women's empowerment story with a romance that doesn't compromise the power dynamics, I recommend A Dream of Splendor. I think it offers an engaging narrative that subtly weaves in culture and customs without ever feeling dull. The subplots explore gender bias, thoughtfully challenging problematic cultural norms. Political elements and conspiracies are also woven into the storyline, helping to propel the plot forward. Altogether, these elements created a rich and complete narrative for me.

The story centers on women running a tea shop as business partners, striving to find success both in their community and in their personal lives. They face numerous obstacles—from rival businesses to entrenched enemies—as they navigate a patriarchal and elitist society. The subject matter is compelling, and I found myself deeply connected to the show.

A Fantasy Romance of Fate and Reincarnation

This is a demon-and-goddess fantasy romance built around reincarnation, fate, and enduring connections that transcend lifetimes. I found it to be a sweet and engaging watch, with enough mystery surrounding the characters' pasts to keep me invested in how the story would unfold.

As a miniseries, the production isn't without flaws, and there are a few gaps in the storytelling. However, the fantasy elements, romantic themes, and emotional moments made it enjoyable overall.

The season 2 ending may frustrate some viewers, as it leaves several threads feeling unresolved. However, there have been discussions among fans about a potential continuation, and comments attributed to cast members have suggested that additional material was planned. Whether that ultimately happens remains to be seen, but the story certainly feels like it has room to continue.

Demons and Fairies: Beautiful Execution with Some Narrative Gap

I really enjoyed this when I watched it during its original release—so much so that I even went on to read the novel afterward. Overall, the storyline was captivating, with well-crafted conflicts and strong narrative progression. The execution and world-building were equally impressive, and the supporting cast kept me fully engaged through their performances and character dynamics.

This drama also features some of the most memorable and emotionally intense scenes I’ve seen, largely due to the strength of the supporting performances. Several characters are portrayed with a level of depth and emotional weight that makes their arcs especially impactful, and they’ve stayed with me long after finishing the drama. I don’t think they receive enough recognition for how layered and compelling their portrayals are.

This was also the drama that made Cristy Guo stand out for me. Her performance was incredibly convincing and added a strong emotional dimension to the story, further elevating the overall viewing experience.

Yu Xuanchen and Wang Xingwei Shine in Historical Comedy

I really enjoyed this and would recommend it. It is absolutely hilarious and engaging, one of Yu Xuanchen and Wang Xingwei's best comedic performances in my opinion. Some segments felt a bit dragged out (once relationships were established between the leads), but it didn't detract from the overall drama and could work better for people who enjoy romance or romantic tropes. Though they aren't unique and are predictable, I enjoyed the character and plot development, wanting to watch the entire drama for its light but fun storyline. It's a solid comedy that left an excellent impression on me.

A Morally Complex Fantasy War Story. Not Perfect, but Still Entertaining.

I’m unsure how to review this because I don’t think the drama will appeal to everyone, yet I personally really enjoyed it. It’s not a top-shelf favorite for me, but it’s still a worthwhile watch, and I don’t regret seeing it.

Pros
. Beautiful cinematography, from costumes to fight choreography to overall world-building and settings
. An engaging narrative that stays focused, with subplots that are well integrated rather than distracting
. Side stories that feel meaningful in their own right and sometimes even steal the spotlight
. A morally nuanced world where different sides feel understandable rather than purely “good vs evil”
. A continuation of the broader Novoland universe
. Subtle romance and fantasy elements that don’t overpower the main story

Cons
. Some action and plot developments feel underexplored, which can make certain moments feel flat
. Occasional inconsistencies in character behavior and tone without clear development
. Some supporting characters feel underdeveloped, leaving gaps in the overall narrative
. Certain relationships lack sufficient growth, which can make interactions feel a bit static
. Dialogue can feel stiff or unnatural at times

Overall, while it has clear flaws, I still found it engaging and enjoyable enough to recommend for viewers who like this type of fantasy political world-building with a more restrained romantic focus.

A Court Drama Full of Mysteries and Twists

I enjoyed this, though I have to admit I forgot I was watching it when it first came out. The pace is fast, and the drama is easy to finish within a day. The premise is engaging, but some subplots contain plot holes, and certain story developments didn't work particularly well for me.

If you're comfortable with melodramatic revenge-driven stories, this drama blends palace intrigue, hidden agendas, shifting identities, and long-buried secrets. The narrative follows a woman whose life becomes intertwined with powerful figures from the royal court as she becomes caught up in a series of mysteries connected to the past. Along the way, the drama explores themes of loyalty, vengeance, power, and obsession while gradually uncovering the truths behind several interconnected events.

While I had some issues with the execution, I found the story entertaining enough to keep watching, especially given its brisk pacing and short runtime.

A Niche Drama for Lovers of Art and Craftsmanship

I really enjoyed this drama. I enjoyed it for its short transmigration backdrop, palace fights, and slice-of-life narrative. It also concentrates on industry work with a focus on the art of pottery. It covers techniques, fieldwork, ceramic designs, and art projects. So while it is very niche friendly, the storyline may not appeal to everyone.

Psychology and Mystery, But a Missed Opportunity

Sorry folks, but this drama took a disappointing turn for me. I was really enjoying it at first—the opening was unique, blending psychological sci-fi elements with spiritual folklorism. I especially appreciated how the narrative revolved around a central mystery, with each episode working toward solving it while also exploring smaller cases that tied into both the main and a secondary storyline. As someone who enjoys detective dramas, this structure was right up my alley.

What set this one apart was its approach: instead of traditional investigations, the show delved into the psyche of different characters and suspects. It was a refreshing take on the genre and kept things compelling—at least for the first half. However, by episode 19, once the secondary case was wrapped up, the show started to lose its spark for me. Although the characters continued tackling smaller cases leading toward the central plot, they felt flat and lacked the intrigue of earlier episodes. As a result, the pacing dragged, and the story started to feel stretched thin.

Mythical and Mortals: A Wonderfully Weird and Surprisingly Funny Sequel

I really enjoyed this drama, and I have it listed under my comedic watches. It has a quirky, offbeat quality that borders on the absurd at times. And I couldn’t help but laugh at some of the unexpected, deadpan moments that were clearly not meant to be taken seriously. At the same time, there’s a genuinely engaging storyline beneath it, carried over from the prequel.

I thought this was a nice continuation of the original narrative, especially with the inclusion of the parents—who were the focus in season 1—even though the original actors didn’t reprise their roles.

A Smart Blend of Forensics and Investigation in a Historical Drama

I enjoyed this drama. However, it has an open ending, which may not appeal to all viewers. That said, it is based on a novel by Xiu Tang (袖唐), so viewers who want additional context or a more complete story can explore the source material. Personally, I appreciated the ending for leaving room for interpretation and allowing the world and characters to linger beyond the final episode.

Miss Truth features a strong female lead and follows a talented forensic investigator who becomes involved in solving a series of murder cases. Along the way, she finds herself navigating personal relationships, hidden agendas, and larger forces at work around her. The drama blends comedy, mystery, romance, and political intrigue. I especially enjoyed the case-of-the-week format, where individual investigations contribute to a broader narrative. The forensic elements, intelligent problem-solving, and gradual unraveling of mysteries kept me engaged throughout.

If you don't mind open endings—or enjoy exploring the novels that adaptations are based on—this might be a great match for you.

The Drama That Pulled Me Into Xianxia

I absolutely loved this when I first watched it. It was one of my first experiences with a xianxia drama like this, as most of what I’d seen before were movies, and the dramas I’d dipped into tended to focus more on historical and political themes. This was also my first time seeing Dilraba Dilmurat and Gao Weiguang, so I didn’t have any expectations going in.

At the time, I was in the middle of my graduate studies—working 80-hour weeks while raising a 3-year-old. My schedule included academic work and lab rotations in a cancer research lab, so I really needed something to escape into, and this show fit the bill perfectly. I thought the narrative was dynamic, blending comedy, romance, and fantasy in a way that kept me highly engaged. It was also my first time experiencing the “three-arc” structure often found in xianxia, which spans three lifetimes between the leads—and I was captivated by each one. I loved how the story transitioned between them, not just to entertain, but to show growth, transgression, and the development of both character and relationship.

This remains one of my favorites. I truly loved her portrayal of Bai Fengjiu alongside Gao Weiguang’s portrayal of Dong Hua—their antics and relationship dynamics beautifully highlighted their contrasting personalities. Even the so-called “minor” characters brought such warmth and presence to the screen that they never really felt minor to me.

A Unique Story Undermined by Its Execution

This drama had so much potential but ultimately missed the mark for me. All in all, I was disappointed with this watch.

The trailer is what initially caught my attention—it was beautiful, bold, and teased some truly striking plot lines. The key scenes they highlighted really hooked me, and the beginning did not disappoint. It had such a strong start—I was immediately immersed in the pacing and easily swept up in the conflicts. The tension was thrilling, with a nice balance of mysterious characters and unfolding storylines. The way the narrative evolved early on was wonderfully done. I enjoyed each character—their stories, their roles, and how they fit into the overall plot. The concept itself is unique and impactful.

But as the series progressed, the execution began to fall apart. The storyline became muddled and disjointed, and the transitions between scenes started to feel abrupt or poorly timed. The pacing dragged from it, and I ended up skipping a few episodes near the end. I also felt the ending could have been much more powerful with just a bit more explanation leading up to the conclusion. That extra context would’ve really elevated the impact of those final moments.

Absurd Royal Comedy That Starts Strong and Falls Flat

I have such mixed feelings about this one. It started off stylistically offbeat, with absurd content and raw execution—but somehow, it worked. It was enough to keep me watching, sometimes laughing wryly, even as I wondered how I was still watching it at all.

The dynamic between the king and queen—between the queen and everyone—was genuinely funny. The ongoing punchline was that she was “ugly,” and the antics that followed were silly but still amusing in their own ridiculous way. However, around the halfway mark, the focus shifted. What began as intriguingly obscure became repetitive and slow. I grew to expect the same rhythm between conflict and resolution—and that’s where the drama lost me. That said, the ending was interesting. The final scene sets up a transition into Season 2, which has already been released.
