News From a Caged Canary to a Maple Tree: A Love Beyond a Cruel War!
🍂 What a rich autumn journey this has been! 🍂 I laughed, got frustrated, fell in love with these characters, cried more than I'd like to admit and ended up with a heartbreak I won't get over anytime soon. Was it the ending I wanted? Absolutely not. I wish Changxuan and Pingjun had more time together, but he ultimately gave everything for his country, even his own happiness.
Set around 1920, The Lament of Autumn unfolds during a turbulent period in China's history, marked by warlords and political uncertainty. I find the title particularly beautiful: autumn represents fading beauty, change and the passing of time, while a lament speaks of love and something lost. Together, they capture Changxuan and Pingjun's story so well: a love that blossomed in difficult times but was never given enough time to fully bloom.
The drama opens with Changxuan's bird flying straight into the military meeting hall, introducing the caged-canary symbolism long before Pingjun enters his life. Changxuan is a man used to power, control and getting his way, but Pingjun is nothing like the quiet, obedient bird he admires. For her, a bird belongs in the sky, not in a cage. Coming from completely different worlds, she refuses to let his wealth, power or her own humble circumstances take away her freedom.
What makes their journey so interesting is watching Changxuan learn that loving someone doesn't mean owning them. Pingjun tries more than once to fly away, but as he learns to let her go, she eventually finds her way back, not because she's trapped, but because she chooses to love and trust him. 🕊️
Neither of them is perfect! They make mistakes, hurt each other and sometimes take too long to understand what truly matters. But that's what makes their growth meaningful. Changxuan learns to move beyond his masks, pride and ambition, embracing responsibility, sacrifice and respect. Pingjun grows from distrust to trust while finding her own strength and identity in a world that doesn't always allow women to choose their own path. I only wish the writers had given her character development the same attention throughout the drama. I felt there was more potential to explore, especially in the middle episodes.
Changxuan's love story with Pingjun began with her jade hairpin and, in a way, ended with it too. At first, it represented his desire to possess her, while for Pingjun, it symbolised her dignity and freedom. As he grew, it came to represent a love built on patience, respect and devotion. At the beginning, he could pick it up with his own hands, but in the end, he reached for it in the mud, only for his fingers to go limp just inches away. If only he had managed to hold it, at least he would have left this world holding a little piece of her. Their story came full circle, from a chance meeting to the devastation of war. So much left unfinished, so many promises unfulfilled. He was so close, yet couldn't reach it.
The performances were definitely one of the highlights of this drama. Cheng Lei was exceptional as Changxuan! His facial expressions often said more than words ever could, and he's truly an acting chameleon, effortlessly shifting between so many emotions and sides of the character.
Xu Ruohan brought a lovely sense of purity and gentleness to Pingjun. Although I sometimes wished for a little more nuance in her micro-expressions, I appreciated her growth, especially towards the end. Together Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan had incredible on-screen chemistry!🔥
The supporting cast also deserves recognition. The cinematography, costumes, lighting and set designs brought this world beautifully to life. The OST deserves a special mention too; it often says what the characters cannot and sometimes the silence is even more powerful.
Beyond the romance, this drama offers a moving glimpse into a painful chapter of China's history, reminding us of the people, sacrifices and lives forever changed by war. Despite its flaws, it's a story that deserves to be remembered.
The maple tree Pingjun planted with their son at the end felt especially meaningful to me. Like that tree, my love for this drama and its characters will remain, holding memories of both the love they shared and the lives shattered by war. They will live in our hearts forever, whether here or gone.
🍂The autumn may be over, but the lament will stay with me for a long time! 🫶
