From a Caged Canary to a Maple Tree: A Love Beyond a Cruel War!
🍂 What a rich autumn journey this has been! 🍂 I laughed, got frustrated, fell in love with these characters, cried more than I'd like to admit and ended up with a heartbreak I won't get over anytime soon. Was it the ending I wanted? Absolutely not. I wish Changxuan and Pingjun had more time together, but he ultimately gave everything for his country, even his own happiness.Set around 1920, The Lament of Autumn unfolds during a turbulent period in China's history, marked by warlords and political uncertainty. I find the title particularly beautiful: autumn represents fading beauty, change and the passing of time, while a lament speaks of love and something lost. Together, they capture Changxuan and Pingjun's story so well: a love that blossomed in difficult times but was never given enough time to fully bloom.
The drama opens with Changxuan's bird flying straight into the military meeting hall, introducing the caged-canary symbolism long before Pingjun enters his life. Changxuan is a man used to power, control and getting his way, but Pingjun is nothing like the quiet, obedient bird he admires. For her, a bird belongs in the sky, not in a cage. Coming from completely different worlds, she refuses to let his wealth, power or her own humble circumstances take away her freedom.
What makes their journey so interesting is watching Changxuan learn that loving someone doesn't mean owning them. Pingjun tries more than once to fly away, but as he learns to let her go, she eventually finds her way back, not because she's trapped, but because she chooses to love and trust him. 🕊️
Neither of them is perfect! They make mistakes, hurt each other and sometimes take too long to understand what truly matters. But that's what makes their growth meaningful. Changxuan learns to move beyond his masks, pride and ambition, embracing responsibility, sacrifice and respect. Pingjun grows from distrust to trust while finding her own strength and identity in a world that doesn't always allow women to choose their own path. I only wish the writers had given her character development the same attention throughout the drama. I felt there was more potential to explore, especially in the middle episodes.
Changxuan's love story with Pingjun began with her jade hairpin and, in a way, ended with it too. At first, it represented his desire to possess her, while for Pingjun, it symbolised her dignity and freedom. As he grew, it came to represent a love built on patience, respect and devotion. At the beginning, he could pick it up with his own hands, but in the end, he reached for it in the mud, only for his fingers to go limp just inches away. If only he had managed to hold it, at least he would have left this world holding a little piece of her. Their story came full circle, from a chance meeting to the devastation of war. So much left unfinished, so many promises unfulfilled. He was so close, yet couldn't reach it.
The performances were definitely one of the highlights of this drama. Cheng Lei was exceptional as Changxuan! His facial expressions often said more than words ever could, and he's truly an acting chameleon, effortlessly shifting between so many emotions and sides of the character.
Xu Ruohan brought a lovely sense of purity and gentleness to Pingjun. Although I sometimes wished for a little more nuance in her micro-expressions, I appreciated her growth, especially towards the end. Together Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan had incredible on-screen chemistry!🔥
The supporting cast also deserves recognition. The cinematography, costumes, lighting and set designs brought this world beautifully to life. The OST deserves a special mention too; it often says what the characters cannot and sometimes the silence is even more powerful.
Beyond the romance, this drama offers a moving glimpse into a painful chapter of China's history, reminding us of the people, sacrifices and lives forever changed by war. Despite its flaws, it's a story that deserves to be remembered.
The maple tree Pingjun planted with their son at the end felt especially meaningful to me. Like that tree, my love for this drama and its characters will remain, holding memories of both the love they shared and the lives shattered by war. They will live in our hearts forever, whether here or gone.
🍂The autumn may be over, but the lament will stay with me for a long time! 🫶

So real, so emotional, so beautiful!
The Kind of Drama You’re Just Not Ready to Let Go Of 🌸❤️🍑Honestly, where do I even start? 🥹❤️ I read the novel way before the drama came out and already loved the story, so seeing it finally come to life on screen made this experience even more special. And now that it's over, I'm really not ready to let it go.
FIRST OF ALL, THE CHEMISTRY. PLEASE. 😭❤️ It's the little glances, the tension, the softness, and all those tiny moments that say more than words ever could. Everything feels so natural between them, and I genuinely wish we could see more of this kind of chemistry in C-dramas!
And JBR's ACTING deserves so much love. That aurora borealis phone call scene??? I'M STILL NOT OVER IT. 😭💔 The way he cried and sobbed so naturally, with so much emotion in his voice, made the whole scene feel painfully real. He absolutely nailed it!
And Flora deserves her flowers, too! 🌸❤️ She's a pure-hearted, persevering, slightly insecure girl fresh out of college who somehow manages to get under Luke's controlling skin and turn his world upside down. I love that she doesn't have to be some perfect, ultra-confident woman to leave such a strong impact on him. There's something so endearing about her, and watching how these two slowly affect each other emotionally was one of my favourite parts of the story.
ALSO, LUKE'S WARDROBE?! 😂❤️ That man was dressed SO well. The styling deserves a round of applause! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
And let's not forget Luke, the adorable cutie dog, who deserves a little appreciation of its own. 🐶❤️
AND THE OST. OH MY GOD. 😭🎶 It fit the drama so beautifully, making the sweet moments sweeter and the heartbreaking ones even harder to get over. Add the symbolism, the character development, and all those little details, and you get a drama that gave me so many reasons to fall in love with it.
Some dramas you watch and move on from. And then there are dramas like this one that leave you wishing you could experience everything for the first time all over again.
The Early Spring, you really have my heart. 🌸❤️🍑 Can you control the feeling of LOVE?!

My dear don’t say goodbye!
🎬 I really enjoyed *The First Frost*. ❄️🥰❄️ It has a beautiful love story, plenty of emotional moments, and a warmth that makes you root for the characters and their relationship.👦🏻Sang Yan is charming, confident, and playful, yet secretly devoted. He never truly forgets Wen Yifan and shows how much he loves her through his actions.
👩🏻Wen Yifan is a gentle, independent reporter carrying emotional scars from her past. Over time, she learns to trust again and open herself up to love.
🔥At times, it felt almost too good to be true to have such a protective, caring male lead—one who remembers the little things and has longed for the same woman for years. I wish the world were full of green flags like him.🤩
My biggest issue, though, was the pacing. 😅 Some scenes dragged on far too long, and I ended up skipping quite a few. The constant flashbacks and frequent shifts between the past and present also made the storyline a little confusing at times. I understand the flashbacks were meant to add depth to the characters and their relationship, but honestly, there were just too many!
🎶My favourite OST is MY DEAR, it expresses their emotional state exactly.
☞ Overall, I really liked the drama. The love story, emotional depth, and the way the characters slowly find their way back to each other made it special. ❄️🥰❄️
