In the Cosmopolitan November 2024 Issue, Zhao Lusi talks about the non-filming break she had last year and how she has come to realise the significance of 'Recharge' and work-life-balance for actors ☀️
❝ The popularity of her dramas has indeed brought Zhao Lusi more opportunities, leading to a busier work schedule. After The Romance of Tiger and Rose, she felt the intense pace of work! Between 2020 and 2023, she averaged 3 dramas a year, with a total of 12 leading roles over 4 years. Behind this stable output is her high level of dedication and relentless effort in her acting career!
Constant work used to be her norm, leaving her little time to recharge.
"Maybe because of the increase in work, my mind was focused on always doing my best. I just felt that I had to cherish every opportunity and didn’t have much time to replenish my energy. At that time, I didn't even realize that actors need to recharge," Zhao Lusi said.
Last year, Zhao Lusi took a few months off and gradually realized that an actor's state of mind is the most important. When in a good state, the emotional expressions of the characters become even more accurate.
During that period, she didn’t make any vacation plans, mostly staying at home. "I just wanted to relax, without any urgent tasks to tackle." She also began cultivating hobbies, such as painting. Her favorite medium is oil paint, which allows for layering and mixing colors to create new shades. When she sees a painting she likes online, she experiments with colors and copies it until the canvas is full. This process is very relaxing for her.
Now, Zhao Lusi is consciously seeking a balance between work and life while continually learning how to manage her time effectively. She has come to understand, "If life is only about work, that’s actually a terrifying thing."
She even jokingly refers to herself as a "time management master," finding ways to make the most of every minute, such as reading scripts or handling work while on the treadmill. ❞
Zhao Lusi reveals in the Cosmopolitan November 2024 Interview that she had read the outline of the Script for The Story Of Pearl Girl in as early as 2022!
****
❝ Zhao Lusi recalls that in 2022, upon reading the outline of the script for The Story of The Pearl Girl, she felt a powerful connection to her character, Duan Wu — a Pearl Diver
Duan Wu, who lived at the bottom of society, grew up in a corner of GuangXi’s bay, constrained by hard labor and strict limitations on her freedom
Its source novel describes her harsh upbringing: at 4 years old, she carried a spittoon; at 5, she chased flies away; at 7, she chopped ginger and scallions; at 9, she learned to use an abacus; and by 10, she was sorting pearls.
Having survived the brutal realities of the pearl diving world, Duan Wu developed a fierce independence and determination. After enduring many hardships, she escapes, joins a caravan, and starts a Jewelry Business
In a time of personal loss and betrayal, she travels south to YangZhou in search of the truth and secures her place in the local jewelry merchant guild
To Zhao Lusi, Duan Wu's story is not about a princess waiting for rescue but rather a testament to resilience in the face of adversity. Portraying Duan Wu feels like Conversing across History, allowing her to vividly experience the character’s courage in seizing opportunities amidst extreme challenges ❞
